Earlier today, I was having a conversation with a few people I go to school with about room inspections. I mentioned to them that a few kids on my floor had been caught with marijuana, but it was as vague as that. Detraction, from what I understand, is a mortal sin when one discloses another person’s serious faults/failings without good reason. Being as vague as I was, not dropping names or going overly deep into specifics, would this still be considered a mortal sin?

No, you’re good. Every school has kids doing drugs. That did not catch anyone by surprise. You did not implicate anyone so don’t worry about it. And even if you did, it would probably be for their own good…teachccd

Well, if I told you there were kids in my town who trashed a school during the night last week. Would that be detraction? Detraction has to name names or be so obviously descriptive that the identities of the detractees would be known. For example if you had identified the grass users as those guys in Apartment 3A in your building I would be concerned. Sleep well and relax. Yes, depending on what is revealed, detraction could be a mortal sin. Based on what you said, I don’t think it even rises to the level of a venial sin in this case.
