just returned from weekend in Detroit. Ostensible reason was a graduation party, but for the first time since my mother’s funeral, all my brothers and sisters were together. I announced planned to visit the Solanus Casey center this morning as a pilgrimage, and got 3 takers (the rest played golf or went to other venues). golfers went to Mass locally at St. Anastasia in Troy, who have a new pastor, and were favorably impressed.

The other church-goers (3 of us no longer identiyf as Catholic) included one of the fallen-aways, and we attended Latin Mass (according to 1962 missal) at St. Josaphat, the old Polish church on Canfield at I-75 near the medical center. Sis purchased a mantiilla at the door, I had a hat, but surprisingly fewer than half the ladies present wore any head covering. Church is simply gorgeous, well maintained, scaffolding in the sanctuary where some repairs are going on was not too distracting. beautiful high altar, of course this was high Mass, but chant version I have never heard before Mass XI Orbis Factor. could not follow as it was a very complex chant (except for the Credo (III)

remarkable how the memories come back, I remember why I love the beauty and reverence, why I have the nostalgia, but also why I appreciate the novus ordo, the revised lectionary, and being able to “sing along” with the choir. I remember also why my dad seldom took us to high Mass, the days I longed for at least one hymn we could sing, the frustration of being a small child unable to see, hear and understand what was going on.

Priest read readings in Latin (hey, I remember, the Epistle Side and the Gospel Side) and then repeated them in English in the pulpit before the sermon. I had expected in the dialogue Mass that he would exercise the option to just read them in English. Asperges rite, incense, lots of acolytes, possibly seminarians from SS Cyril & Methodius. Glad we went and hope soon every Catholic will have the chance to experience this TLM Mass, but personal hope is that this will make Novus Ordo in Latin more common.

Went over to the Solanus Center at the Capuchin friary and soup kitchen on Mt. Elliot, across from the old cemetary, which itself is a digest of Detroit history. gowing over on Mack we passed at least 4 of the old Polish neighborhood churches, one of which seems to still be having Mass (Sweetest Heart of Mary).

Solanus Center was great, good exhibit on his life, with artifacts, vestments from his last Mass, the meager possessions he died with: habit, worn sandals, breviary, cord, rosary, and violin "which he played with more love than skill) and his harmonica. What beauty there is in the life of an elderly man of innocence and virtue. Was reminded that when my brother was a baby and was being taken to Henry Ford Hospital for a mastoid infection, parents detoured to Fr. Solanus’ grave to pray for him, as did thousands of Detroiters every year, and in this case as in so many other prayers were answered.

Was given 3rd class relics for each of my siblings and chldren, and the sister for whom we made the pilgrimage (praying for her specific intentions, and her return to the faith), found a rosary she loved so we gave it to her as a gift. If you remember my asking here a few weeks ago how to go about acquiring a relic, imagine my surprise to find these scraps of fabric which have been touched to his grave, encased in plastic with his picture, with a crocheted trim, are given away to visitors. Am sending to those on our prayer intention list, including pregnant daughter.

Pilgrimage was a success. Went to Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak on my last visit, and could not get to old St. Annes because of construction, but we were very happy with it all. Next time will get to Assumption Grotto. Also did 2 art exhibits and a concert, all involving the talents of various siblings, so it was an intense if brief weekend in the Motor City.

Thanks for sharing.
The first time I learned about Fr. Solanus from a TV program last year, I was immediately attracted by his holiness and his story.
I sought for his intercession for one specific intention along with many prayers of Rosaries were granted soon afterwards.

What? No visit to Assumption Grotto? You’re breakin’ my heart, annie!

could not do it all, as all 3 have Mass at the same time, and we usually do AG. My specific purpose was to visit the Solanus Center, St. Josaphat came up because they were on the front page of the Michigan Catholic at bro’s house, with Cardinal Maida’s statement on the MP. They are offering to assist any parish that wants to learn and introduce TLM. Sis, the one we are all praying for, expressed interest in TLM specifically so that is where we went.

Sounds like a great day! Interesting about the relics. Very glad your sister got to see a beautiful Mass. I too hope that we start to have the NO in Latin more often. Our parish is very orthodox and daily Mass is sometimes chanted in Latin for the ordinaries. I can’t follow along very well since I’m not of the right age to have learnt as a child, but I’d love to learn now.

Pop up to SS Cyril and Methodius next time ( it’s only about 2 miles from St, Anastasia’s)

Fr. Ben just announced that we will be starting a 6:30pm TLM in January. 👍

the priest on Sunday is from there, and my brother said most of the acolytes are seminarians there, except for a couple of smaller boys (that is a good sign). I usually only have 1-2 days a year in Detroit so have to limit my time, success was in not letting my family derail my plans, which usually happens. my brother lives on the border of Troy/Sterling Hts. so we are very near the Polish Cultural Center, SS C/M etc.
