I was wondering if anyone could explain the history of each of the seven sacraments? I mean, for example, I know the sacrament of confession was once done publicly, with long penances. Somewhere along the line, we developed private confession. What about the other sacraments?

The seven sacraments (Holy Mysteries) of the New Law were all instituted by Christ, and they are Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Orders, and Matrimony. The seven sacraments were all mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures and some aspects of them were left under the control of the Church, so in that sense there has been development, but not in the other aspects.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I appreciate the historical information and the links and the book recommendation. Thanks! 🙂

To answer one question, I would say the Confiteor is a development of a public confession (though not meant to take place of confession).
Just my opinion, I admit I could be wrong
