Development & Peace Speaker has Speaking Engagement Canceled

Father Luis Arriaga, director of the Miguel Pro Centre for Human Rights (PRODH) was to appear at the Ottawa diocesan centre on Saturday and at a couple of Churches. This was a big deal, because there are reports that indicate that the organization supports a woman’s “right to choose”.

I sent an e-mail to some of the staff at one of the Parishes, they were shocked that this kind of a speaker was booked and speaking at their Churches. They went straight to their Priests about it.

It was a big deal obviously. Now it’s a big deal for another reason; my favorite Jesuit personally investigated the claims and proceeded to cancel all of the speaking engagements for Father Arriaga.

Is PRODH a Catholic Church sponsored organization similar to Human Life International?

In seminary, they should have realized the views this man was holding and not ordained him.

This is the right response to someone whose position on abortion rights is incompatible with Catholic teaching. Would that my archdiocese had the same courage and committment to Catholic teaching when our pro-choice catholic governor was invited to speak at an official archdiocesan conference. I wrote to the archbishop. His response was basically, “Governor so and so is very good on poverty and immigration justice issues blah blah blah.” Would that the archdiocese of L.A. had the same courage when Barbara Boxer was invited to speak at an event held on archdiocesan grounds. Boxer is the senator who supports partial birth abortion rights - perhaps the most pro-abortion rights senator of them all. And she enjoyed the venue provided to her by the catholic archdiocese of L.A. in order to get re-elected. The problem isn’t that there too many pro-abortion rights politicians, the problem is that too few leaders of the Catholic church stand up to those politicians.
