Devil costume ok?

However, I would not come in and start yelling at the child to take it off, since the wife has just bought it. I would first sit down in private with my wife and discuss the matter, since obviously we are not in agreement on a relatively simple issue. Then I would explain quietly and simply, in one sentence, why I find the costume objectionable and invite her to come with me while we exchange it for something suitable.

Very good, constructive responses, all of you. Thanks. It worked out, we returned the devil costume and bought a different one (a spider costume, as the vampress costume was unavailable). Do you know why my wife bought it in the first place? It was the cheapest one available, only $9! So Dad coughed up a few more dollars for a different one. At school they are having a saint celebration and my other daughter is going as St. Lucy (my favorite saint) complete with eyeballs on a platter.

Question: am I out of line? Is this much ado about a cute devil costume. Even though the intention is to be cute or funny, I don’t like the thought of my daughter walking around in a devil costume? Would like everyone’s feedback, but don’t want this to turn into a Halloween, pro-con debate, but rather a discussion about what costumes are appropriate for children to wear on Halloween. I never liked non-scary costumes for Halloween like Superman or princesses, and think scary costumes are fun, but still think dressing as the devil is going too far.

IMO I don’t think it would be a pretty wise thing to allow your daughter to wear a devil costume so no I dont think you were out of line

Halloween costumes are a matter of taste and prudence, not sin (for the most part). Personally, I don’t like evil to be turned into something cute. So I would be less bothered by a grotesque devil or witch costume than I would be by a cutesy one that results in these evil things seeming “not so bad.” That said, I generally don’t like the idea of dressing up as evil characters, even when they are ugly enough to be “in character.” Its like this - I wouldn’t give my son lots of deceptacon transformer toys (the bad guys). But I would give him the good transformers AND the bad ones, so he can re-enact the battles between good and evil. In the same way, I don’t have a taste for people dressing up as evil characters, unless they are paired with another person dressed up as the good guy. I like to show the conflict between the good and the bad, and the ultimate triumph of the good. But then, that’s my personal sense of taste/prudence. YMMV.
 
I think you all miss the point of the All Hallow’s Eve Celebration. It was said that on All Hallow’s eve demons walked the streets looking to steal souls. On all souls day of course we know that we pray for souls to leave purgatory. Therefore people dressed as demons so that the demons would think they were one of them and leave their souls alone. I doubt very much that Saints would be out walking the streets stealing souls and if anything dressing as a saint would make them a target for this. The implication was that the participants were smarter than the demons. We are after all the chosen creation of God as we are made in His own image. This is also the same premise that started the Angelic wars and the fall of Lucifer. Straight jealousy on behalf of some of the archangels that became archdemons. Know your history and your Bible not just bits and pieces that apply to your everyday.
