I am an Othodox Catholic so I am hoping for an Orthodox answer to this. šŸ™‚

I have a liking for chilli. I love hot sauces and the like. Now, a lot of them have names that are, what I would call playfully evil. I have a bottle of sauce in front of me at the moment called ā€œSmokin’ Devilā€

As an observant Catholic where do I stand on things like that? I assume the same place as eating things like Devil’s Food Cake and the like. Where exactly is that though?

I’d guess that as long as it’s not any of the ā€œadultā€ branded hot sauces, it shouldn’t be an issue. We avoid the hot sauce section at one local store now because of the abundance of pornographic labels and bottles they carry.

Really? You think a Catholic needs to have a ā€œstandā€ on Devil’s Food Cake and Diablo sauce?

This is really scrupulous.

Make two cakes as a metaphor: one with Devil’s Food Cake and the other an Angel Cake. Of course, then you have to struggle with the free will decision of choosing which cake to eat. šŸ™‚

 If it causes that much confusion for you, simply rename your Devil’s Food Cake to something like ā€œChocolate Cakeā€ and find another brand of hot sauce whose name doesn’t cause you such distress…and realize it’s a marketing gimmick that simply likens the ā€œhotnessā€ of their sauce to the perceived ā€œhotnessā€ of hell…and move on!

Eating a bit of both isn’t an option? šŸ˜›

Seriously?

Seriously?

a) peel the label off if it offends you

b) see someone about this scrupulosity

c) ā€˜take a stand’ on something important like helping a homeless charity or a pro-life pregnancy support service, don’t get hung up on a silly name for a silly product.

Oh good grief!

Did you know there is a town called Hell, Michigan and and town called Hell, Grand Cayman?

Would you avoid visiting these 2 places?

How about Devils Island, Wisconsin?

How about cheering for the Duke Blue Devils?

Then there is Devils Lake, ND.

We won’t even mention Hell’s Kitchen!!

I thought there was a Hell, Alaska. Someone had sent me an e-mail with a road sign in a frozen landscape, with icicles down the sign, because I had said something in a committee meeting about ā€œhell freezing over.ā€ The sender told me the sign was in Alaska!

And ā€œDevil’s Towerā€ National Monument in the Grand Tetons! 😃

Not without committing a culinary sin.

I’m hoping the original poster just wanted to talk about this as a point of conversation. It’s kind of interesting from that point, but worrying about it is…

At the winery where I work, we sell a cheese called ā€œQueso del Diabloā€ (Devil’s cheese) because it’s made with ghost chile from India (which makes habanero peppers seem like bell peppers!) Our cheesemaker puts 16 oz. of ghost chile powder per 100 lbs. of cheese to make it (we have a ā€œmilderā€ one that has 8 oz. ghost chile per 100 lbs. cheese.)

Both have been known to bring people to their knees and beg God for mercy and relief! 😃

This. Just. This!

Given all the bizarre threads I’ve seen on here, where someone asks whether or not X, Y, or Z is sinful or not, this is the one question I’ve kind of been waiting to see someone ask. Mind you, I’m not mocking the OP for asking it: I used to wibble about this very thing myself, when I was a kid and suffered from a terrible case of scrupulosity. I literally used to tiptoe past the Drake’s Devil Dogs in the store!

Related to my Devil Dogs comment above: If I remember correctly, there was an American squadron of World War II fighter pilots who had the nickname ā€œthe Devil Dogsā€ because they’d taken down so many enemy targets.

You need to see a priest about your scrupulosity asap.

My mom was born in Hell, Michigan!

Does that make me - wait for it - the daughter of the devil?
