For many years I’ve put my focus on the Sacraments & morning offering & trying to live a good Catholic life. Period. Now I’d like to open the door to some devotionals and sacramentals. Which are your favorites and why? Also, many folks say I “must” include the rosary. Why?? Can’t I just select the chaplet of divine mercy… or miraculous medal… brown scapular… etc? I really just want to add back in ONE thing right now…

The rosary and the brown scapular go hand in hand. Besides, Our Lady tells us to pray the rosary everyday . You have nothing no lose but your damnation by praying it everyday.

The brown scapular would be a great place to start I think!

I have so much baggage with the rosary from certain events in my childhood. It is really hard for me. I don’t understand why everyone pushes it so hard. It keeps me away from the other devotionals to be honest. If the rosary is SO much better & I have such a hard time (emotionally) praying it… why bother with the other devotionals that are apparently not worth much(unless you ALREADY) say the rosary…

I’m sorry for what ever happened in your past in regards to the rosary, but there is a reason why many saints see the rosary as the weapon for our times. Cardinal’s Burke and Bishop Schneider recommend we all pray it daily for the church for a reason. The rosary is more powerful than you think. Give it time. Pray on it. Eventually you will come around and start to pray the most holy rosary again.

Think about it this way. There are people that are terrible experiences with the clergy (you know what I’m referring to) and yet they still have faith that in what the clergy does for people. They still have faith that the small incident doesn’t reflect the clergy as a whole.

Can we pray other chaplets as well? Absolutely. I pray the St. Michael’s Chaplet and the Chaplet of the Holy Wounds as well as the rosary. There are promises attached to other chaplets, but none had ever been recommended so heavily by our Holy Queen more than the rosary.

Can I suggest you listen to the story of Fatima again if you haven’t lately. Realize how real it is, Our lady showed the gates of hell to 3 children… and begged them to pray the rosary for sinners. Our world needs you to pray the most perfect prayer, other than the Holy mass. The prayer that reflects on the life of our Lord through the eyes of His mother, our mother. The realness of the Spiritual battle at hand. And we are living through it. The power of the rosary is real and promised! The rosary is our spiritual weapon.

God bless,
Therese

Please remove that link; it’s from a heretical site, and their information isn’t reliable.

I would recommend the Liturgy of the Hours. It may seem a bit much or daunting, but you can start small and slowly with one hour and add incrementally.

I’d also add not to feel pressured to do something that doesn’t work for you. I wasn’t called to the rosary for a long time and felt some guilt about it. That’s changed now, but it’s still not my go-to because I have others that suit me and my prayer life better.

Their teachings do not agree with the Carmelite order. That’s the primary issue.

ETA: they also make claims about the scapular that both the Vatican and the Carmelites have said are not part of the sacramental teaching/devotion (re: Sabbatine privilege).

Happens all the time. It’s unfortunate that they pop up first in web search results.

Yeah for sure. That’s the website I used for info when I was first enrolled because, frankly, I didn’t know any better. It seemed like a reasonable Carmelite resource and I had never been warned about them or the Sabbatine privilege before. Thanks so much for opening my eyes to it. I’ll have to do more reading and will be sure to help others steer clear in the future.

@Swiftdove I think there’s a misunderstanding; my comment about the bad link wasn’t directed at you.

I would suggest this as one of a few official sources you could reference:

It’s a wonderful devotion, and it will only take a few minutes of the priest’s time. When my priest enrolled me, I had everything printed out… ready to go! I bought mine from the nuns. Got some extras for father to pass out to those who were interested. A small and easy service for our Lady.

This is very touching & convincing. I will need to think about this more…

Just know, Jen, that not only am I and others here on CAF praying for you, but God’s holy family in heaven are praying for you as well. I hope and pray that God graces you with the gift to forget whatever it was that was traumatic for you in the past. God love you.

That and the first five Saturday devotion.
That I do! It only entails one rosary per month& I like that it’s limited to five (even though something always comes up & I have to start over!) But it feels doable. Not endless. And practical. I know Mary promised that world peace can come from it.
