Hello everyone. I have a question about devotions. I don’t really understand them. I’m a new catholic as of Easter Vigil 2013, and the more I try to surround myself with catholic media and learn more about catholic lifestyles, I run into people who say they have a devotion to a particular saint, or a strong devotion to Mary. I kind of understand what it means, but how does one develop a devotion to a saint? I was southern baptist in upbringing and when the only time the word devotion was brought up, it was to mean the 30 minutes or so you spent reading from a book called a devotional which discussed a biblical passage and a way to apply it to your life.

To become devoted to a saint or to develop a devotion, do you just make a conscious effort to do what that saint did, pray as they prayed? I’m just confused.

Start by studying Saints. Look at their lives, and their works. If you see one who you like look into their lives even more. Study them. See if they have an suggestions left behind for people of the future to do, like the Virgin Mary told us at Fatima we should pray the Rosary every day to increase peace in the world. You may ask for that Saint to pray for you, and you may have conversations with them. Get a statue of them, or a picture and hang it up. Try to live like them, and be like them. Good luck.

God bless.
