A few simple questions: for deacons of the Roman Rite, is the stole to be worn under or over the dalmatic?

I ask this because when I watch footage of the Papal Masses in St. Peter’s, the deacons wear the stole under the dalmatic. However, at my parish, the deacons wear the stole over the dalmatic. Why the discrepency?

Another question: Must deacons wear the alb under the dalmatic during Mass?

The dalmatic is the eucharistic vestment and the stole should be worn UNDERNEATH it.

Also underneath the dalmatic, the deacon should wear an alb.

The alb is to be worn first, then the stole, then the chasible for priest and the dalmatic for deacons. Some designers for chasibles and dalmatics use an artistic mentality and not a liturgical mentality when they design vestments. They want to put the stole on the outside for they make them very fancy and ornate. These would not be seen if the chasible or dalmatic covers them. I always wear the stole under the chasible. I had heard one reason and there are many reasons to wear the stole underneath the chasible or dalmatic. I was told that the stole is our sign of our authority as an ordained minister but that the chasible represents charity with covers the authority shown in the stole. It is to represent that we must temper our authority with charity.

For liturgical rites outside of Mass, an alb and stole is used. The chasible and dalmatic are only for Mass. However, many parishes do not have dalmatics, so many deacons are seen only in alb and stole.

First of all, thanks for the replies.

Are there any official documents that specifically mandate how the liturgical vestments are to be worn (for deacons specifically, I already know how the priests are to be vested).

Oops, never mind.

GIRM (with adaptations for American Dioceses) #336, #338 explain this.

Um…
Because the deacons at your parish are not vesting correctly…

Here it is!

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal said:
337. The vestment proper to the priest celebrant at Mass and other sacred actions directly connected with Mass is, unless otherwise indicated,** the chasuble,** worn over the alb and stole.
  1. The vestment proper to the deacon is the dalmatic, worn over the alb and stole. The dalmatic may, however, be omitted out of necessity or on account of a lesser degree of solemnity.

Considering how the deacon’s stole is worn, isn’t that awkward when it’s over the dalmatic?

Really? I though they’re used in processions as well a benediction.

A cope is worn for Benediction (and Stations of the Cross), over alb and stole. If you’ve never seen a cope worn, it is exactly the shape of Darth Vader’s cloak, and it swooshes around just as majestically.

Sometimes a faithful deacon who would prefer to wear the stole properly, wears it over his dalmatic because the priest insists on wearing his stole on top of the chasuble.

I’ve also experienced the opposite (a priest who typically wears his stole over his chasuble wear it under when a liturgically aware deacon was visiting).
