I was wondering what the deacon(s)’ at your church wear during the celebration of Mass? In my travels, it seems to vary greatly. I was wondering what they were wearing on the altar.
DIT, The Deacons at my Parish wear the Alb, Deacon stole, Dalmatic, AND the Maniple. Oh almost forgot they also wear the Amice. All of this over the Soutane.I was wondering what the deacon(s)’ at your church wear during the celebration of Mass? In my travels, it seems to vary greatly. Thanks for the link and info. Honestly, I don’t know what they do at our church. As I said, I see their names in the bulletin, but have never seen any of them assisting at Mass. I don’t even know why we have deacons if they don’t fulfill a function set out for deacons.Yikes, if you have deacons and they are considered Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, then they have a serious problem. If they are participating in in the liturgy, then they should be on the altar vested doing their specific role.
I am not sure if they are ordained or not, to be perfectly honest-- just know that the bulletin indicates we have 3 priests, one seminary student, and 3 deacons, and gives their names. I have been attending Mass at this parish for 3 years, and have only ever seen the seminary student (a different student at different times, of course) assist at Mass. As I said above, I don’t even know why we have deacons if they don’t assist at the liturgy. All they have ever done at Mass is help distribute the Eucharist, which is why I referred to them as EMHC’s (maybe not the proper term for these 3 in particular, but that is the function they are filling). Maybe they help to fulfill other duties outside of the Mass proper (weddings, etc). I don’t know.I agree with stbruno. Are you sure they are ordained? The first mission of our class after ordination was to make people fimiliar with the role of the permanent deacon. (We were the first class in our diocese.)
God bless

That’s the way it is at my parish, too. I voted, however, based on what is the usual.alb and stole during the week and some sundays. dalmatic on festive days.
I take it that means your husband’s pastor does not permit him to wear a dalmatic. Why would a deacon be forbidden to wear the vestment that is proper to his ministry?Alb, dalmatic & stole. At my husband’s assignment, he is only allowed to wear his alb & stole.
And can a pastor forbid it??I take it that means your husband’s pastor does not permit him to wear a dalmatic. Why would a deacon be forbidden to wear the vestment that is proper to his ministry?

I’m guessing that’s the reason that we don’t have our deacons (three of them) wearing dalmatics all the time–haven’t gotten the donations to cover dalmatics in all liturgical colors (they’ve got the color for Easter season).
The Dalmatic is worn at processions and benedictions except when these have a penitential character…Catholic EncyclopediaCorrect me if I’m wrong, but even in the Tridentine Rite there were days when the Deacon was not allowed to wear the Dalmatic (e.g. during Advent and Lent, with the exception of certain feast days). Does the Normative Rite have these same restrictions?
