Dialogue Homily at Mass?

Hi all,

My family and I went to a different parish than normal this past Sunday and were confronted with something I haven’t seen before and think is probably not allowed during the homily, which was given by a deacon. At the beginning of the homily the deacon and the priest had a little dialogue (which was more like a comedy routine , but that is beside the point). Is this acceptable as both men are in Orders and both are allowed to give the homily?

Also, this parish calls forth all the kids at the end of Mass and Father blesses them. My kids really enjoyed this, but I’m not sure it is permissible. Does anyone know?

All the parishes I’ve been to have a mass a mass set aside to do what you are describing, usually elementary school age kids. So, I think this is permisable…

Yes, dialogue homilies are allowed at the discretion of the pastor and/or Ordinary of the Diocese. Be happy it was a priest & deacon and not a deacon and a random, “women’s ordination believing, the Chruch is behind the times, female pastoral associate”, which is usually the case in my diocese when we have dialogue homilies. (And yes, our Bishop OK’d this, not sure if our Apostolic Administrator has addressed the issue, or if it even something that he can… but, I digress.

As far as inviting the children up for a special blessing, if it is after the Prayer after Communion, but before the Final Blessing, I quess there is no problem with it, it just seems a little redundant, as everyone will be blessed upon dismissal.

Nothing rubrically prohibits it, and it can be a pastoral boon sometimes perhaps, but it can get a little corny, I imagine.

It seems you are ranking the Deacon lower than the priest on the canonical ability to give homilies scale. Priests and Deacons have exactly the same faculties to preach.

I am studying theology & pastoral ministry at the graduate level, and have many friends who are in diaconate formation, so I think Deacons are tops!!

The point I was trying to make was “be happy it’s a priest & deacon” and not priest ***or ***deacon, and random lay-woman!!

Thanks again for all the answers, I was hoping this wasn’t a case of liturgical abuse as the physical structure of this church is beautiful and traditional and the art inside is wonderful. Also, the priest is a very friendly and welcoming man and we chanted the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei during Mass !

HEHE - I’m going through the formation too, and was suprised to learn that the faculties for preaching for priests and deacons are the same

I was so lucky to be with such a great gorup of guys- 12 of them in all,
all ordained last May! Our diocese’s biggest group in nearly 20 years!!

Yes, the faculties are the same, but sadly, some priests in our diocese do not think so.
Many of our deacons feel like “second-class citizens” (their words, not mine). It’s so sad!
