Dianetics

My undergrad degree is in Psychology, and I’m pretty familiar with Dianetics and Scientology, so I thought I’d comment.

Scientology presents itself as an alternative to psychology/psychiatry (in fact, it is vehemently opposed to psychiatry). The premise of Dianetics is that our mind is divided into two parts: the reactive mind, and the analytical mind. The analytical mind is good, and the reactive mind is bad. Basically, the reactive mind stores memories or pictures (called “engrams”) of all the painful, traumatic experiences in our lives. The reactive mind is seen as the source for most of our problems (whether mental or physical). Dianetics claims that its techniques can rid one of these painful memories, and rid one of their reactive mind, which makes them “Clear”, or free of their reactive mind.

The way that Dianetics does this is through an instrument called an “E-meter”. It’s sort of like a lie detector. They claim that the E-meter can detect these traumas, and help one to “handle” them. The way it works is that one recalls a painful event, and then “runs” it (goes over the event out loud) until they get more information about what happened and why it affected them. They supposedly will then be able to deal with the effects of that event, go back to previous similar events, and the engram is erased. What then happens is that people will recall “past lives” (because the “auditor” (counselor) will ask them to go back further in time to a similar event until they “recall” a past life), which were somehow connected to these events.

Now, in my view, Scientology/Dianetics has some valid points in its introduction materials and services. This is important because this is how they hook you. The introduction things work, so you keep going back for more. Multiple ex-Scientologists have said the same thing. Scientology services are cheap at the beginning, and then quickly add up and become expensive.

There is nothing wrong with going to a Scientology organization to check it out (I’ve been to the “orgs” in DC and NYC). However, know that as soon as you go in, they will try to “hard sell” you. They will try to convince you to take a personality test, find out what your major problems are that Scientology will ALWAYS be able to correct, etc. They may tell you that Scientology is compatible with all religions, however the issue of past lives (which isn’t really openly discussed) is obviously incompatible with any type of Christianity. Most of the new buildings have displays for non-members that explain their beliefs, so you should be able to see how that goes. They may even have an E-meter for you to try out.

So, there isn’t anything scientific about Scientology/Dianetics. It presents itself as the “real psychology” and is very anti-psychiatry. It wasn’t developed by any scientific method. The space alien stuff is hidden away at the upper levels, so you won’t hear anything about those at all. Those upper levels (called “Operating Thetan”) are only taught at special buildings called “Advanced Organizations”.

This video shows you what it’s like inside a church of Scientology:

(I find it amusing that they have “Sunday Services”)

Also, this is their introduction video to auditing:

“Body thetans” - I think that is the name for the things that attach to you that you need to try to get rid of.

I personally would not go anywhere near a gathering of Scientologists. I saw video footage of some guys who encountered a gathering of them in the street, asked them some questions the Scientologists didn’t like, and when they tried to walk away, the Scientologists took off after them, repeatedly asking them, “What’s your crime?” and they wouldn’t go away. They’re crazy.
I’ve seen that video many times. It’s hilarious!

L Ron Hubbard is both the author of Dianetics and founder of Scientology. I believe his religion is based in the concepts found in Dianetics, which is why it serves are the scientologist bible. There is no genuine science involved with “Scientology”, it is exactly what has been described to you. The have invented a gadget called an “e-reader” which has a bunch of dials and meters on it, when you touch it they start fliping all over the place and they say

“Oooooh, my… It looks like you need some counciling sessions, you have a lot of spirits attached to you”. After which you are supposed to shell out an ever increasing amount of money for such sessions.
They don’t tell you about the spirits (body thetans) at the beginning. What they do at the beginning is ask you to take a personality test, or think about what a major problem in your life is (that is affecting everything you do. This is called a “ruin”). No one ever has a good personality test result. You will always be in desperate need for Scientology services, since it’s the only thing that can help you.

What TheosisM said.👍

They are also opposed to all kinds of medicines.
And they believe that handicapped people have their various conditions because they are:( “degraded beings”. That they somehow deserve to suffer…Its:( horrible.

ahha…yeah I’ve come to that conclusion as well from my own, totally uninformed assumptions but just for my own education…idk I’m interested…

I’ve also noticed that when your trying to tell someone somethings bad, and all you can come up with is ‘Its a cult’ with no explanation of why…lol…your concern kinda goes in one ear and out the other…
Oh, heavens…let us not into the discussion of religion admit any good sense!

My brother was ‘into’ Scientology for a short time. He couldn’t afford to keep taking the courses, however, so they lost him. They do have a great deal of psuedo-scientific babble that I haven’t gone into much. My judgment of them is based upon what it has been proven that they actually do; snakes in mailboxes, lawsuits out the whazoo…a particularly interesting copyright case that made the wholesale quoting of an entire book “fair use” because the Scientologists refused to present the actual book to the court for comparison: I’m not certain what the reasoning behind that one was.

(shrug) Then they have this concept of the 'Sea Org." which, at least on the surface, seems to be run as a fairly definitive example of a 'destructive mind control cult" (and I get REALLY leery of using the word ‘cult’ without a lot of adjectives).

As to their central beliefs? I really have no clue. I have to discount VERY heavily the anti-Scientologist viewpoint. Anti’s lie. The problem seems to be that in order to find out what the Scientologists have to say, you have to pay lots and lots–and pretty much commit to the organization. I’m not that curious.

There much more out there than “it’s a cult”, just so you know. Good luck and God bless…

I think a couple of you need to be reading further into the thread. The OP actually didn’t know anything about scientology.
