Did anyone(or any of your kids) watch the VMAs?

If your answer is no all you missed was the host make fun of abstinence before marriage with some performances in between. It seems as though Christian teens are made fun of in a way that Muslims or Jews never would be without any outcry. Jordin Sparks did stand up to him though.
 
i didnt even know that it was on, not that id of watched anyways.
 
My daughter had it on. She told me about the host making fun of the Jonas Brothers’ chastity rings. She was pretty mad about that. Then some guy performing with his pants down below his butt cheeks so his underwear was there for the world to see. Then the host asking America to vote for Obama to prove we aren’t racist. I’m sorry, bu I don’t need some yahoo from another country using an award show to tell me who to vote for. And to imply that America votes for or against the color of skin rather than what the person stands for.

I had agreed to let her watch it because of the Jonas Brothers being on. She’s a huge fan. But dang…
 
I like how our family is blissfully unaware of mainstream commercial pop music. Not one of us can stomach it. We listen to satellite radio, an eclectic mix of styles, our teen would rather cut his ears off than listen to top 100 🙂

None of us know who the Jonas Brothers are either 😃

No offense to any English people here… it’s just that I would never tell you how to vote…and expect the same in return kwim??

This isn’t directed towards you, but most people in this country couldn’t tell the world who to vote for - because Americans barely pay enough attention to most other countries. Most Americans couldn’t even place 20 countries on a map of the world. I’m kind of wow-ed whenever I can have a political discussion with a foreigner; I think Americans should get informed about other countries’ candidates and processes as much as we can!

I understand this wasn’t directed at me and you are right to a point, Americans don’t know enough about the world around them in most cases. Even with that… How can one presume to tell others in another country how to vote when they themselves would not be subject to that rule of law? That was my point. I have very definite opinions about many leaders of different countries, but I am subject to what I see in the media, an institution I totally distrust, for information. I can’t see me voicing an opinion as an American on Spanish or French elections for example so I keep my mouth shut and pray.

You’re surprised that MTV is mocking abstinence and pushing Democratic candidates?

Come on…MTV has been known “pushing the envelope” morally ever since they were popular. Given their history of sleaze, it would be more surprising if the VMA didn’t have any morally offensive content!

Some excerpts from the VMA wikipedia article:

1984: Madonna’s performance at the First Annual MTV Video Music Awards in 1984 is considered to be an iconic performance in music history. She took the stage to sing “Like a Virgin” wearing a combination bustier/wedding gown, which included her trademark “Boy Toy” belt. During the performance, she rolled around on the floor, revealing lacy stockings and garters, and made a number of sexually suggestive moves.

1999: Lil’ Kim showed up at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards with an entire breast exposed and only a tiny piece of fabric over the nipple. I watched them tonight (in the UK we get them a day later) I am a fan of Russell Brand he has very british humour and in this country the chastity ring is not really seen (although there were a couple of kids who took their school to court for banning jewellery including this).

I quite enjoyed the show it was good to see a lot of new artists having never heard of the Jonas Brothers I wasnt particularly enthralled not my type of music but I suppose they arent aimed at the 18-25 market! I liked Pink & Kid Rock though!

In the UK it is commonplace to mock politicians (from all countries) we ‘diss’ our own on a regular basis - you should have seen the beating Blair and his cronies took and George Bush does get quite a slagging off… I think its the british humour to be honest and it was OBVIOUS that that humour did not translate across the ocean. I think our fair countries are quite different in many ways which isnt necessarily recognised on a day to day basis!

I must say I respect that religion plays a heavier part in the politics of the states than over here and there are many times when I am quite ashamed of my countries down sliding morals - but as for Russell Brand he is a comedian and he did what comedians do! I do find him very amusing and it did reflect what is shown in the british press - for better or worse Im afraid!

I don’t know what MTV were thinking. British humor (really anything but USA Humor) generally doesn’t translate well in USA. I thought that Russell Brand was really funny but I’m an Aussie. But is the VMA even an awards show anymore I think there was like 8 awards all night. Why don’t they just call it a concert and stick to the performances.

DISCLAIMER This is not a diss to Americans it is just a different culture and I know that is a generalisation but I don’t know every American so this just my view and what I gather from watching TV and listening to the Radio
 
Gross- we avoid MTV as much as possible. I can’t even begin to describe how the shows on that station disgust me. I did hear on a radio show this morning the reason Britney Spears came is because for the first time she actually won awards, which the radio host seemed to think had more to do with making sure she would come to the VMAs than with deserving the awards.
I don’t pay too much attention to actor’s or singer’s political views, especially if they are mean spirited or involve name calling.
 
i f-ing hate the VMA’s.
  1. the music is **** compared to 90’s rap(i listen to old school stuff)
  2. they make fun of chastity
  3. girls are dancing half-naked
  4. they are just a bunch of stupid yahoos who have nothing better to do than live in their fantasy world. God have mercy on them.
i also hate MTV. actually, i don’t even watch it, cuz its just full of B.S. all of the so-called “comeies” aren’t even close to funny. i 'll be praying for them so that they’ll find what truly what life is about there is more to life than lusting after wonmen’s body parts. A LOT more.
 
The thing that irks me about mocking chastity (aside from, you know, mocking good moral behavior) is the implicit attitude that goes along with it: “Self control? **** that!”

Ah — I don’t suppose you can blame sinners for acting like sinners.

Happily yes. I work long hours and don’t have cable and I find I could care less about tv in general. I happened to be home and turned on a tv show I didn’t know the name of but within 2 minutes 2 of the charactors were sleeping together in a quickie. I mean no commitment no feelings at all involved and the guy was supposed fly off to another country never to return. After five minutes of that show I turned it off. Nah I don’t miss tv at all the awards shows aren’t any better. 🤷 :eek: :rolleyes:
