My son high-school teacher keeps repeating that ‘Christinaty enslaved black people’ …It’s so ridiculous statement that it’s hard to discuss or give advice of how to approach the teacher. I’m not sure which christian church he means or which historical period. Or if he means that slaver wouldn’t exist if there was no Christianity ? I’m looking for advice how my son should approach the teacher ? He doesn’t like my direct involvement.

That’s news to me.

He should simply ask, how and why they did it. See what this “teacher”/brain washer comes up with.

People enslave people.
Jews have enslaved people.
Muslims have enslaved people.
Christians have enslaved people.
Hindus have enslaved people.
Communists have enslaved people.
Capitalists have enslaved people.
The Romans enslaved people.
The Greeks enslaved people.
The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany enslaved people.
Black people have enslaved people.
White people have enslaved people.
Irish “travellers” in England enslave people in this day and age.
Eastern European gangs enslave girls for the sex trade.
Girls are enslaved in Asia for the sex trade.

(If you have a mortgage, credit cards and debt with the banks, and pay taxes then you could say you are enslaved - but that’s my personal opinion)

There is a distinct difference between saying someone who was a Christian enslaved someone, and Christianity enslaved someone. To prove the latter, one would have to show a doctrine that suggested or insisted that someone be enslaved, and they cannot, since it doesn’t exist.

That aside, I recall the story of some Jesuits in the early days of this country who landed in Maryland, or somewhere in the northeast, and became part of the community. Their superiors in Rome eventually found out that they had black slaves to help them as servants and wrote back that they were to get rid of them immediately! So, they did. They sold them!
But they weren’t acting within the Church’s teaching. They were acting according to the culture in which they lived at the time.

He should tell his teacher(?) that he interested in learning more about the topic and can he recommend some resources.

Before the Civil War slave owners relied on the bible to defend slavery. Abolitionists relied upon moral grounds. But slave owners took the bible out of context. In the Old Testament captured enemy soldiers were turned into slaves because there were no prison camps and the captors had no other options than executions. Slavery was the only alternative.

Numerous Catholic missionaries died defending Indians and Blacks from enslavement. On the other hand some convents and priests owned slaves. Some actually bouught them for the purpose of freeing them. Others simply owned them. As a rule they were better treated than other slaves. I believe that in the year 1500 the pope banned slavery.

A problem with judging history is that we look at it through 2012 eyes. George Washington was a great president and a slave owner. In the past there was no penicillin, heart transplants, air traffic, instant communications, etc. A papal decree might take months to arrive, if ever.

Curiously, abolitionists were, I believe, comparable to animal rights activists today. They wanted Blacks to be better treated but did not think they were equal. They opposed education beyond the 4th grade, equal pay, interracial marriage etc.

America had the 3/5 Compromise. At one time the US Constitution said that a Black was 3/5 human (since removed by an Ammeendment).

America’s founders included many agnostics, Unitarians, occultists and fringe religious groups. Not quite as Christian as we tend to think. Actually a rather odd group to guarantee religious freedom.

Unfortunately, it is true.
It is amazing how Christianity abolished slavery in the Roman Empire and practice slavery trace on blacks for centuries.
I think that it is something every student should know: click here.
Unesco has got a Program called Breaking the Silence for students: click here.
It was called the triangular slave trade: click here.
Pope John Paul II was in Gorée and asked forgiveness, apologized for slavery: click here and here.

I am praying in this moment for all the slaves who were enslaved by European Christians. It is a sober remainder that evil is inside us.

I have replied to this very question in an older thread. I’ll restate it here.

Catholic Answers apologist Mark Brumley wrote a very informative article on the history of slavery in Christian history.

This ridiculously sourced article may also be helpful on the Church’s opposition to slavery as well.

The rest of my older post I’ll quote verbatum:
(. . .)In a nutshell, in ancient times, servitude was common to soldiers who lost to war and were forced into labor for a time. In most cases, a person would voluntarily choose to serve another, in the form of indentured servitude.
But it was abhorrent, both in Old- and New Testament eras, to forcibly place a person into servitude and strip them of human rights to the point that they are essentially treated as property. That’s chattel slavery–the kind that my ancestors endured during the slavery era of the United States.
Chattel slavery is an abomination that many Catholic clergy, including popes, have vehemently denounced over the millenniums.
In the Bible, one of the twelve tribes did try chattel slavery, in Jeremiah 34:17. That got nipped in the bud very swiftly by the Lord.
I’m sure there were abuses noted by some Catholics in history–but these incidents are certainly not attributable to the whole of the Church or by the Magisterium as to be tolerated.
Remember, too, that servitude existed way back when because there were no “welfare options” such as food stamps, poor houses or anything of that sort. Many people and their families indentured themselves because the alternative was certain starvation and death.

Is he aware that Christianity also liberated womankind in Rome? It was Christianity that made men and women equal to each other there - or at very least much more equal.

Tell him that Sol Plaatjie was mentored and educated by missionaries. He went on to find the African National Congress. If he doesn’t know what the ANC is, he should not be a history teacher nor even speak of human rights. In South Africa, throughout history, it was the Christian missionary and the Church who looked after the rights of the natives. This upset the colonists a great deal. The Catholic Church was fundamentally opposed to the policies of Apartheid which ended in 1993.

Have your son read about St. Bartholomew de las Casas and his fight against slavery in the New World.

I don’t think quoting liberal wikipedia proves anything…sorry. I wouldn’t be surprised if my son’s (English) teacher works for them. JP2 could ask for forgiveness for sins of Christians who among others were involved in slave trade and many other wrongdoings (like abortion). There is no proof that Christ and his Church ever taught that slavery or abortion is right.

I gave several links but You seemed only see the Wikipedia.
Here is UNESCO: click here.
Wikipedia liberal? How come if it is done by everybody? I have articles on wikipedia !

I’ve read that UNESCO page and there is nothing about Christianity teaching that slave trade is morally good. UNESCO is also politically liberal and it was being used as a platform for communist and Third World propaganda in the past (officially condemned by the United Kingdom, the United States in late 70s and 80s). Nod everybody writes for Wikipedia, it is so liberal and biased that it triggered start of another project conservapedia.com👍

Boy, but what is your message?
You only criticize but you know say what you stand for…
You are racist? What do you have against the Third World?
I work for UNESCO programs so I am communist?
So, conservapedia.com is reliable ad always say the Truth…

I read both Wiki and Conservapedia, and many other sources. I’m not racist and don’t have message here. This discussion is too far from the topic I started. Good luck with your help programs.

There is a difference between Christians who are sinners and Catholicism that is the church that Christ, who was perfect, established that has Christians as members
  1. in distant but partial communion - ordinary Christians
  2. in a closer but still imperfect communion due to sin - ordinary Catholics
  3. in a closeness that approaches perfection while on earth - Saints
  4. perfect - Mary and Christ
Slavery predated Christianity. It can be traced back to the Code of Hammurabi (ca. 1760 BC) Around the year 1500, slavery had virtually died out in Western Europe, but was a normal phenomenon practically everywhere else. This is because of such as this: “In 1102 a national ecclesiastical council, held at Westminster, under Archbishop of Canterbury, Saint Anselm, prohibited the slave trade. They decreed: ‘Let no one hereafter presume to engage in that nefarious trade in which hitherto in England men were usually sold like brute animals.” So white slavery of whites ended.

It was also clear that slavery was wrong in general. Christ told St. Bridget of Sweden that so-called Christians who didn’t set slaves free would be heavily punished. She was canonized in the year 1391 by Pope Boniface IX, which was confirmed by the Council of Constance in 1415. Because of new discussions about her works, the Council of Basel confirmed the orthodoxy of the revelations in 1436.

After slavery ended among whites in Europe for Christianity, they still enslaved blacks. They were much more harsh to blacks than they formerly where to whites because they were racist and they were more harsh to blacks than blacks where to blacks (except in Muslim countries such as Sudan). They were so much more powerful than other regions of the world, especially Africa, that it was totally one-sided. John Newton was a slavetrader that realized at the point of severe illness, nearing death, that if God was just, he would punish him. So he wrote “Amazing Grace” and supported abolition, convinced his friend William Wilberforce to not become a Pastor and instead work on the abolitionist movement. Wilberforce ended the slave trade throughout the British Empire because of his faith. Also Catholic thinkers such as Bartolomé de las Casas gave reasons in Latin America why slavery was wrong from a slave’s point of view that helped the Church theologians and rulers to realize how wrong it was, i.e. Valladolid debate.

Some Popes tried to limit abuses of slavery through decrees. At least one Pope is cited as supporting slavery of infidels. These weren’t declared infalliable. Often there were differences between Popes and Catholic regions, such as America. Augustine Tolton was a former slave who wanted to become a priest, but no Catholic seminary in the United States would admit him due to being black so a seminary in Rome admitted him, and he trained in Rome.

Slavery ended in most countries after it ended in the West.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abolition_of_slavery_timeline

Some forms of slavery, prostitution, still go on. Google devoted money to ending slavery in 2011. cnn.com/2011/12/14/us/google-anti-slavery-grant/index.html

So, yes, Christians enslaved blacks, but then most people who call themselves Christians also have sex outside of marriage and Gingrich has been married 3 times. It is similar to the Protestant Reformation. The scandals of the Church led people to leave the Church, but they also lead to the Council of Trent where the canon of the Bible was determined for the first time. So the scandal of racial slavery among Christians caused slavery to reach such horrors that the Church determined that slavery was wrong. Were there racists in the Church? Yes. Are there still racists in the Church? Yes. Are ALL people in the Church racist or is Catholicism racist because some people are racist, no.

St. Bridget of Sweden’s Revelations: Book 1: Chapter 28. Time 1303-1373.
Now, however, know that in the Neapolitan citizenry many different horrible and secret sins are being committed which I am not relating to you. But instead I am speaking to you now about two kinds of open sins that greatly displease my Son and me and all the heavenly court.
The first sin is the fact that in this said city many buy pagans and infidels to be their slaves and that some masters of those slaves do not bother to baptize them and do not want to convert them to the Christian faith. And even if some of them are baptized, their masters bother no more, after the slaves’ baptism, to have them instructed and trained in the Christian faith or to train them in the reception of the Church’s sacraments than they did before the slaves’ baptism and conversion. And so it results that the said convert slaves, after accepting the faith, commit many sins and do not know how to return to the sacraments of penance and communion or how to be restored in the state of salvation and of reconciliation with God and of grace.
Moreover, some keep their female servants and slaves in extreme abjection and ignominy, as if they were dogs - selling them and, what is worse, frequently exposing them in a brothel to earn money that is a disgrace and an abomination. Others, in fact, keep them in their own houses as prostitutes both for themselves and for others; and this is extremely abominable and hateful to God and to me and also to the whole heavenly court.
Some other masters so grieve and exasperate these said servants of theirs with abusive words and blows that some of the said servants come to a state of despair and want to kill themselves. Indeed these sins and acts of negligence much displease God and all the heavenly court.
For God himself loves them because he created them; and to save all, he came into the world, taking flesh from me, and endured suffering and death on the cross. Know too that if anyone buys such pagans and infidels with the intention of making them Christians and wants to instruct and train them in the Christian faith and virtues and intends, during his life or at his death, to set these slaves at liberty so that the said slaves may not pass to his heirs, such a master of slaves merits much by this and is acceptable in the sight of God. But know for very certain that those who do the contrary will be heavily punished by God.
