Did dinosaur death come through Adam?

Death came into the world through the sin of Adam. St. Paul says that all creation was affected by this sin. Science teaches that dinosaurs were around and died out before man appeared on earth. An effect always comes after a cause, not before. If they died before Adam’s sin, their death must have some other cause.

So, what do we mean when we say ‘death came into the world through Adam’? Is this literal death of any and all creatures, such as dinosaurs? The death only of humans? Some sort of “spiritual death” of humans rather than physical death? Is this just some poetic metaphor?

I thought I understood Genesis, now I am confused.
