One seminarian mentioned to me recently that there was one Pope who celebrated Mass once on Good Friday. I tried to ask for details but the person wasn’t able to say who and when, but insisted there was such an incident because the Bishop told him so in class. Does anyone knows about such an incident?

Thanks!

No. There is NO MASS on Good Friday. what the Pope likely celebrated was the Celebration of the Lords Passion

THANK YOU! The Easter Triduum is considered as one long Mass. Sadly, my parish bulletin listed the Good Friday service as a Mass.

Oh, it was probably just a mistake, like we all make from time to time. No need to get mad. 🙂

Just enjoy the Triduum. 🙂

Thanks. I was told the Pope is the Supreme Legislator and so he could adjust the rules for himself, and that apparenty one Pope in history did that once before. Just wanted to clarify the facts before I say anything else to this seminarian.

The celebration of Easter Sunday and Good Friday are two of the oldest feasts in the Church.

This article outlines Good Friday, and it should be noted that they trace it back to the earliest days, including that Mass is not celebrated on this day but rather the Mass of the Presanctified (i.e. distribution of Holy Communion consecrated beforehand).

While, historically, these things were quite fluid in the early Church and evidence is quite sparse on many aspects of the Church’s celebrations, it is **certain **that evidence from the the 8th century exists that Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday.

So if he’s talking about a Pope in antiquity, I would say he cannot prove anything one way or the other. If he’s talking about a Pope after the 8th century, he should provide proof.

It is up to this seminarian to provide proof of his assertion. Simply saying it does not make it true. I don’t know what point his teacher was trying to make, but unsubstantiated claims of this kind sow confusion in the faithful and should be avoided, especially by someone who aspires to the priesthood.

He should provide proof or retract his statement.

I’m not certain, but he may have meant the funeral mass for the earthquake victims at L’Aquila, Italy on Good Friday in 2009. The mass was not celebrated by Pope Benedict, but by his Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

Good call. This may indeed be the source of confusion.
