How would a Catholic respond to this position?
  1. It is evil to kill an innocent human being.
  2. God commanded Abraham to kill his son.
  3. Therefore God commanded Abraham to commit an evil act.
  4. Therefore God cannot be all good.
“What kind of a god asks a man to kill his own son? What kind of a man creates a rationale for accepting such a command?”

Thanks for your help.

Dear friend,

You are making the common mistake of placing God and us on the same level. God is not just a bigger version of us! It is NOT and evil act for GOD to take human life. Since God is the Author of life, He alone has the right to take it. And He can do it in any way He chooses. It is not a sin for Him to take what already belongs to Himself–i.e., human life.

He didn’t sin in asking for Abraham’s son’s life. And Abraham did not sin in intending to take it because he was obeying God.
