First, there is no evidence in Scripture that there were human beings or hominids before Adam and Eve.
Since science cannot examine the soul, today, and declare it actually exists and has certain properties, there is no science to back up statements that God just picked a pair of almost humans and dropped souls into them.
There is no scientific basis to assign scientific attributes to the soul and attach them to man’s rationality. From a scientific viewpoint, we are simply biological mechanisms.

Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents” (CCC 390).”
