Did God know his son was going to be killed?

I was at a bible study at my Church this morning, the Pastor was giving it. He said that God did not know that his son was going to be killed/crucified when he sent him here.

This is totally opposite from what I was taught and believe, I was taught that Jesus mission was to die for Our sins, that is why he was here. I am really confused.:confused:

Your pastor needs a course in basic theology, especially regarding God’s omniscience. :bigyikes: The Father knew that His Son would be crucified; He also knows when ALL of us will die.
 
A CATHOLIC priest said that? Holy cow. If a Catholic priest doesn’t realize that God knows everything that was, is, and will be, I’m pretty worried about what’s being taught in your parish.

Maybe I’m assuming too much and this wasn’t at a Catholic church. I really hope that’s the case. Either way, though, you might want to consider whether this is the right place for you and your family to be.

It was part od God’s plan, read the Catechism of the Catholic Church sec. 599 - **“Jesus handed over according to the definite plan of God” **Jesus’ violent death was not the result of chance in an unfortunate coincidence of circumstances, but is part of the mystery of God’s plan, as St. Peter explains to the Jews of Jerusalem in his first sermon on Pentecost: “This Jesus [was] delivered up according to the definite plan and the foreknowledge of God.” This biblical language does not mean that those who handed him over were merely passive players in a senario written in advance by God.

What your Pastor MIGHT (hopefully!) have meant was that it was not impossible that all the people involved in Christ’s crucifixion COULD have chosen, since they all possessed free will, to not do what eventually culminated in Christ’s crucifixion.

But, since reality is what actually happens, and Christ WAS crucified, God in His eternity did always know that Christ WOULD be crucified, as that is what actually happened.

This goes to the mystery of free will, and the meaning of omnipotence/omniscience.

Just as it was an act of free will that Adam and Eve “fell”, and not a certainty, it was POSSIBLE that Christ wouldn’t have been crucified due to the free will choices of men.

Yes, it is A catholic Church and he is a Monsignor!

Not only did the Father know, but, speaking of the coming crucifixtion, Jesus said ‘For this reason I came into the world.’ What was this ‘lamb slain before the foundations of the world’ talking about?
 
The Father knows all and the Holy Spirit searches all.
 
Thank you everyone, I knew he was wrong I am wondering should I go speak to him about it and ask why he said that?

No, because I was not the only one that said HUH!, the woman sitting next to me had the same look on her face that I am sure I had. She said “what is he talking about that’s not right!”
It is very disturbing to me also.

You must speak to him about this and ask him how can it be that God, in whom there is no shadow of change, went from now knowing His Son was going to be crucified, to knowing that fact that He was?

From the Catechism:
212 Over the centuries, Israel’s faith was able to manifest and deepen realization of the riches contained in the revelation of the divine name. God is unique; there are no other gods besides him.24 He transcends the world and history. He made heaven and earth: "They will perish, but you endure; they will all wear out like a garment…but you are the same, and your years have no end."25 In God "there is no variation or shadow due to change."26 God is “HE WHO IS”, from everlasting to everlasting, and as such remains ever faithful to himself and to his promises.

If you get no satisfactory explanation (and I can’t think of one unless he had a senior moment), then you must alert your bishop.
 
I know that a couple of people who were there includung the woman sitting next to me will be at Mass tomorrow morning. I am going to speak to them, maybe we can go see him together and ask him. If not I will ask him myself, because it really is upsetting me. Thank you!

I pray that your meeting with him will go well. Be sure to ask the Holy Spirit to give you the right words to say. Godspeed!
 
At your next bible study you or some of you might ask him to explain what he meant when he said that. Explain that it has confused a number of you and press him on it - have a real discussion. Don’t be afraid to question your priest - above all, be respectful but have a real discussion about it. You may find that he menat something other than what you think (we can only hope!)

If not - I would high tail it outta there!
