I have tried to observe the Fast today … this morning I had a small piece of toast at around 730 AM (after Mass), then for lunch a bowl of broth with rice noodles at noon (about 6.5 hours ago). I just fixed dinner for the family and put it in the oven, and there was a solitary piece of lightly buttered bread and half a tomato slice leftover that didn’t fit into the recipe. So I ate it instead of throwing it away. Dinner won’t actually be ready for another 30 minutes, so I feel guilty about eating it. On the other hand, it’s the same thing we’re having in thirty minutes, just not cooked yet, so is it part of the same meal? I could have waited to eat, but I just hate to waste food and it would have been thrown away otherwise.

Did you INTEND to break the fast? If not, don’t worry about it. We all do the best we can.

If you ate some food from the pot while you were cooking, to taste it, that would count as part of the same meal, and that could be half an hour before it was done also. So does this.

In addition you were concerned about wasting the leftovers, so you weren’t eating it out of greed or gluttony.

Perhaps eat a wee bit less of the actual dinner than you would normally.

Don’t worry about it. You didn’t intend to break the fast.

Today at work my manager brought pie and put it in the break room. On my first break I cut me a piece to save for my lunch break and without thinking I licked the knife:blush:

My own opinion (not endorsed by my cats) is that, yes, it is part of the same meal. Just inform your Guardian Angel that you were remembering all the starving children in China, and did not want to waste any food.

well the CArb addicts diet says we should make each meal last not over an hour, so I would say you’re good

I would also say your intent and your dedication to conversion, obedience, humility and charity are far more important than what you did or did not eat and when you did it.
