I was talking to a friend about someone he doesn’t know and will never meet (the person we were talking about lives on on another continent) and I jokingly said “she’s a bit of a whore” without even really think about what I was saying. But it’s true that this girl is very, uh… sexually experienced and thrives on male attention and we were both thinking that, the person I was talking to said he was thinking the same thought but wasn’t going to say it. Is this something I need to confess?

I personally would not call it a mortal sin.

For it to be mortal:
  1. it must be GRAVE matter (this could cause scandal/gossip to the girl and is a bit of a slap to her dignity…but since you “know them by their fruits” … )
2 you must know what you’re doing is wrong…which you do.
  1. you have full consent of the will…is this something that just kinda blurped out without you reall thinking ?
All 3 conditions must be there for it to be mortal.

However, you can confess ANYTHING in confession…you don’t have to only give up your mortal sins. It’s a very common practice to confess anything that’s in your mind and heart. Since you’re on a public forum with this…it’s obviously bugging you enough to where I suggest to you to confess it.

God bless

Well the friend I was talking to doesn’t know this girls name. I’ve never mentioned her name.

Yes, I blurped it out without thinking. And immediately felt very guilty about it. I know it’s not right to talk about people like.

You feel a bit guilty about it because you feel you were a bit uncharitable. This isn’t a mortal sin though - you were describing someone’s acts truthfully and giving your opinion in vernacular language about how those acts make that person appear, so you weren’t telling lies or bearing false witness.

Seems like a mild venial sin to me, nothing to get too worried about, but practise “custody of your tongue” so that you will refrain from saying nasty things about people. Remember the old saying: ‘if you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all’ - particularly if there’s nothing to be gained by it. Of course if someone’s actions are bothering you and making you feel bad, even if you’re not directly affected, you’re within your rights to talk to someone about it. You just need to do so charitably.

So, on the assumption that you were of a suitable disposition to receive Communion before you spoke, I see no reason to suggest you aren’t still in such a position, all other things remaining equal.

By all means include it in your next Confession if you feel you will benefit, but don’t feel compelled.
