Hi everyone. Earlier my dad called me. He was calling to tell me not to bother my grandma because she is sick. He told me not to bother her in the morning either. I told him that I had to go over there tomorrow and get my gas money. I was not trying to be selfish or anything but he thought I was and he started yelling at me. So I hung up on him. I don’t think I am any longer under his authority because I am 27 years old and I live on my own with rent help and bill help from my grandparents because I am unemployed and trying to get on disability. But my question is, did I commit a mortal sin by disrespecting my dad and hanging up on him? I didn’t really think about it before I did it. I went to confession just a few hours ago and now I’m terrified that I’m in a state of mortal sin again! Please help!

Holly,

If I am off base here, I am open to gentle correction. I’m 49 years old with three children, ages 10,8,6. I can’t divulge my wife’s age for reasons of personal safety. :D:slapfight:

When we are children, the commandment to honor our parents requires that we be obedient as well as respectful in our speech. When we become adults, we are responsible for our own behavior, and do not have the same obligations to obedience as we did as children. However, to the extent that we can, we ought to show deference and respect for our parent’s wishes. At all times, we need to strive to maintain a respectful demeanor toward them.

It’s understandable that at age 27, you would get wildly frustrated with your dad coming between you and your grandmother. If hanging up prevents you from saying something that you might regret, then it seems the better choice, but should be preceded by saying that the conversation is over, before it gets out of control. “I love you, good night” is a nice way to finish before ending it.

You don’t need to be obedient. You do need to be respectful. If you were less than respectful, apologize, reaffirm your love, and move on.
