So just a few minutes ago, I accidently inserted my headphone thing into a USB and the USB Drive would no respond when I inserted my mouse, I told my Mom who was in her room with my Dad that it happened and she said we could go exchange it tomorrow. (The Laptop Was my X-Mas Present) I restarted my laptop and everything worked fine again so I went back to my parents room to tell them it worked. My Dad told me in a very rude way that he didn’t care and that it wasn’t his computer. I yelled at him and said “I was telling my Mom! Shows how much you care about me!” I was wondering if this was a mortal sin as I disrespected him.

I guess you are having some problems with your dad? (Or he has with you.) To speak the truth is never a sin, not venial nor mortal. Disrespect? Hmm…yes and no. I think you only did answer him in the same manner he did answer you. Those things happen, don’t worry, I reckon you should confess it next time if it still bothers you. Respect is a thing you earn, show respect and you will gain respect. Your dad did not respect you. Generally speaking, we do have a obligation to be respectful and polite to our parents, as you well know, it is one of the Ten Commandments but in that situation…I think you are good. If my kids would yell at me I would first think what I did say and if I think I did wrong I would blame myself.

I can’t answer as I don’t know how was your conscience and feelings towards your fathrr, maybe only your confessor can answer.

Meanwhile, please reflect on today’s first reading. Today’s the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, so the other readings (specially the second) would be also of great reading to your father and You.

Sure there are problems between You and your Dad we are not aware of. However one thing you can always do when upset with your Dad, even when he is wrong, is to control yourself for the moment, speak through silence and prayer. Respond when you are calm enough to not disrespect your father.

First reading: Sir 3:2-6, 12-14

[bibledrb] Sir 3:2-6, 12-14 [/bibledrb]

It doesnt seem like a sin but you can discuss it with your priest to make sure…also discuss it with your mother…

If you feel you disrespected your Dad, go and apologize. He is probably the one who paid for your computer. Whatever. He is your Dad.

Good rule is never go to bed being angry. You never know when you will lose someone you love.

Confession is, of course, good. But one needs to make amends WHEN THAT IS APPROPRIATE and will not cause any additional harm This would be that case.

It’s not unlikely that your parents were enjoying some private time together, and you interrupted just in the middle of a good part.

Maybe give your parents a little bit more space when they’re in their bedroom? If you were living with a spouse and your parents under the same roof, you would want the same consideration.

Joel, honor your parents, even when they are wrong or disrespectful to you. Don’t ever raise your voice to your folks. That’s my advice.

With respect to your question, Please know that you cannot accidentally commit a mortal sin. You have to work at committing a mortal sin. You have to know in your heart beforehand that what you are about to do is a mortal sin. Knowing that, if you still choose to do it anyway (full consent of the will), then and only then are you committing a mortal sin – provided, of course, that the act constitutes grave matter. If any of these 3 conditions are missing, the sin, if there is one, is something less than mortal.

That said, I don’t think you committed a mortal sin. You’re 14 and you were a little rude to your folks. Being rude to your folks when you are 14 is pretty commonplace. At 14, being obnoxious is pretty much your job. 🙂 In my mind, what you did does not rise to the level of grave matter. Moreover, you certainly don’t sound like you gave the matter much thought before you shot off your mouth. As such, I don’t see how you exercised full consent of the will. To me, what you did is a venial sin. Mention this venial sin in your next confession. In the meantime, apologize to your Dad for raising your voice to him.

Good luck. I’ll say a little prayer for you today.

👍

Something young people need to learn is that they don’t have to share everything they know, the moment they know it.

Mortal sin? Doesn’t sound like it. But the person to talk to is your priest.

Doesn’t sound mortal to me. Why not just apologize to him?
