Hi. I am aware that we are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday. Late last night, I caved in and ate a piece of chicken. I normally have no problem doing without meat, but I have been on a difficult low-calorie, low-protein diet and had been feeling weak and unwell most of the evening. I almost fainted at the Ash Wednesday service.

I felt badly for eating the meat, but did not remotely consider that it was a serious offense until I happened to see a few posts on the internet this morning which said violating the Ash Wednesday fast and abstinence rules was “grave matter.” . Now I fear I committed a mortal sin. However, since I did not know it was considered grave matter and therefore did not have full knowledge, and also possibly because I was unwell, I am hoping that I have not committed a mortal sin. I can say with certainty that, had I even suspected it was a mortal sin, I would not have done it. However, for my peace of mind, I would appreciate it if someone could clarify this for me. Thank you.

Hi,

You did not commit a mortal sin for the reasons you have given. To commit a mortal sin, the act must be objectively sinful, the person much KNOW that it is sinful and the person must freely choose to act on it.
