Did I commit a mortal sin or a venial sin?

I was online yesterday exploring sites like Hulu.com for TV alternatives because I’m getting rid of my Direct TV and going to an antenna and watching shows online to save on the costs of cable/satellite bills. I was seeing whats on Hulu and my curiosity got the better of me and I looked at some R rated movie with a lot of nudity. I didn’t stay long but my curiosity got me. I was also on another TV/movie site similar to Hulu and once again it had porn on it and again I looked at it real quick to see. I didn’t watch for but a few instances and I closed out of it. I was not online intent on looking at porn but I fell to curiosity and did view some images but did not sit here looking at them lustfully. I have had some past problems with porn which I have under control which is probably why my curiosity got the better of me. I will be confessing it this week. My question is I know I sinned but is it a venial sin or a mortal sin???
 
If you do not know that looking at (unmentionable) was a mortal sin, then it is not a mortal sin, For something to have been a mortal sin, it has to have been the following
-Deliberate Intent
-You must have full knowledge that it was a mortal sin, and committed it on purpose, with full knowledge.
and
-It must be of grave matter

If you didn’t mean to commit a sin, and you didn’t know that it was a mortal sin, then it is not a mortal sin.
 
You didn’t accidentally arrive at the pornographic material. You clicked on it deliberately, knowing full well that it was wrong. Bring it to confession and avoid the near occasion in the future.

I have to agree with this. And the fact that you had problems with porn in the past, indicates to me that you knew it was grave matter. As far as I can tell, this was a mortal sin and needs to be mentioned at your next confession.
You might want to consider some kind of computer porn filter to avoid this particular temptation if you have had issues with it in the past.
 
It may have been a near occasion of sin but I hardly think that it is a matter that could separate you from God for all eternity. The fact that you ask this question shows (to me, at least) that you fear offending God and that you truly desire Him, which is what is called contrition.

Jesus told St. Faustina that all souls have a right to His mercy and that the greater the sinner, the greater the right. Tell the priest about it in confession so you can remove all doubt and take comfort in the fact that Jesus loves us all so much that He gave His own life for us. Remember what it says in the psalms, "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his mercy endures forever."
 
Great replies…I will mention it in confession this week for sure. I’m still not sure if it was venial or mortal but by mentioning it I will cover it. I slipped up for sure. Curiosity killed the cat…thank you all for your responses
 
The danger of the Internet. So many great uses of it, but evil ones as well.

Mention it at your next confession, and that you put yourself in a near occasion of sin.

It’s morally not right BUT I don’t think it’s a sin worthy of hell.

We are human and we ALL fall and I think God understands.
 
Was it just nudity, or did the movie involve the depiction of sexual acts?

Nudity in itself, if not for prurient interests, is not a sin.

The CCC’s definition of pornography is:

“2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials.” (italics are mine).

If nudity were a sin a lot of great art would be sinful, including art in places like the Sistine Chapel.
 
I think you should reconsider your decision to switch from DirecTV if it is going to cause you to struggle. Sure, DirecTV affords plenty of the same opportunities, but your thread makes me believe that having it doesn’t cause the same level of struggle (perhaps you have blocked certain channels??). Just a thought.
