Did I commit a sin?

On Sunday I was putting some things away in the sacristy I noticed some crumbs on the counter. They appeared to from hosts. I did not clean them up because I was thinking that they shouldn’t be consecrated crumbs because there is no purifying of vessels or anything of that manner going on in that area. There isn’t any good reason for me to believe they are consecrated. The already purified vessels are put in a cabinet above the counter. The priest purifies at the altar at our church. I am assuming that the crumbs were from the sacristan opening the packages of unconsecrated hosts before mass, they would do that job in that spot on the counter. I know when I was the sacristan I would clean up unconsecrated crumbs immediately, that way there would be no confusion about what they were. If it were just one or two pieces I would have consumed them but there were several and they were covered with dust. I didn’t really know what to do with them so I just left them. Should I have assumed they were Jesus? Did I sin? I sometimes think that I am being over worried about such things. I know we have many good sacristans and our priests really believe in the Real Presence and they would not leave Jesus lying out on the counter like that.

I would ask the priest about that. I believe that from your post you were saying that the unconsecrated hosts are in a different place apart from the consecrated hosts right? If that’s the case, then the crumbs are from unconsecrated hosts. I would think that the consecrated hosts are either in the tabernacle or in a separate container apart from the unconsecrated hosts. I wouldn’t think it’s a sin because it wasn’t intentional or anything. This is my two cents.

They weren’t intended to be consumed in their current state. I don’t see why Christ would see any purpose in continuing to remain in the crumbs.

Consecrated hosts would be in the tabernacle. They would not be brought back to the sacristy.

They most likely were not crumbs from consecrated Hosts because they were crumbs on a counter top in the sacristy.

However, when there are crumbs from consecrated Hosts, they certainly are Jesus. As long as the crumbs can be recognized as having come from consecrated Hosts, they must be treated in the proper manner - either consumed if they are uncontaminated, or dissolved in water, which is then disposed of in the sacrarium.

You don’t see how Jesus would remain there, but it is Doctrine that this is so. I would suggest you learn more about the faith.
