Preface: Yesterday I met with the local priest about scrupulosity…

Regardless, I am wondering if I may have committed some type of sin here. What happened was that I was at dinner with a couple of other students and we were engaging in deep theological discussion. We did, however, previously, speak about technology and how some of us wished we could regress to a time when technology was less advanced, others disagreed. We then began speaking about end-time prophecy and the good in not paying much attention to it and how much wrong comes from paying to much attention to it; anyways, I made a comment in a joking fashion without meditating on it prior and having no intention of misleading anyone (all of whom are Catholic in this Catholic institution we attend) and said to the person who was adamantly for increased technology that his computer was the AntiChrist or at least a son of the AntiChrist (in reference to the rise of technology in today’s society). I then briefly, still jokingly, made a comment about another student speaking to the president about the one-world government junk and the Illuminati stuff. All in a joking manner. Anyways, the student with the computer muttered heresy under his breath towards me and it really struck me… So much so that I mentioned it to the student and another and asked if they though it was a sinful what I had said even though I had no intention of teaching or misleading or scandalizing…

Please offer aid…

Also, the student with the computer and I spoke afterwards about people dying in mortal sin (he is a Catholic Studies major I believe and is probably going into the seminary after school) and he said something about not being able to reconcile believing the Church’s stance on people dying in mortal sin and I said I also struggled with it (he was talking about the Church not knowing anyone is in Hell sort of thing and I was agreeing with him)… Still no intention of attempting to mislead or scandalize or anything I just want everyone to be in Heaven and I struggle with the concept… At this point I believe it was only him and I speaking as well…

The rest of the conversation with everyone was great talk about the Trinity… One of the best things said was an explanation of the Trinity being that a Father does not become a Father until a Son is born of the Father… Thus the Love between the Father and the Son is the Spirit which emanates outwards upon us… Interesting and lovely thought.

God bless!

It’s not heresy to refer to the computer as Anti-Christ; but it’s not necessarily true or good theology, either.

Heresy is the adamant, stubborn rejection of a revealed truth. Heresy is not merely making an incorrect theological statement. Put it this way: if a priest, in a homily, says something erroneous, this does not make him a heretic. He only becomes a heretic were he to be confronted and corrected with the true teaching, and yet refuse to accept it.

Regarding your comment: the computer may be used as a tool for evil ends, and these evil ends are similiar to those of AntiChrist. However, the teaching of the Church identifies the AntiChrist as a person and not as a technology. The use of technology and not technology itself is where distinctions between good and evil are to be made.

I agree, I was just referring to the notion that it would be nice to live in a simpler time period… Personal preference of mine. I personally use technology, I am a student and have a Macbook Pro and one of the first iPod Nanos and an iPod Shuffle (Nano is not as good for working out)… I enjoy technology and the internet but if I was offered a chance to live with or without technology, I would opt for the latter.

I took a course in college where we studied technology and when increased technology may be a burden rather than an improvement.

Two books we read, which may interest you:

Technology and the Future, Albert Teich. The price for the latest edition is a bit hefty, but you may be able to find a cheaper, slightly older edition. The book is a collection of essays by various authors, including Leo Marx (not to be confused with Karl Marx) and EF Schumacher, the Catholic economist known for his “Buddhist Economics”.

Technopoly, Neil Postman. The main argument is that new technology that claims to make life easier requires a new bureaucracy. This new bureaucracy generates its own problems, and more technology is created in an attempt to solve the problem, but in its turn only repeats the cycle. .

Every member of these forums who has opened a thread asking if they have committed a sin has turned out to be very scrupulous.
You should stick to your priest and be directed what he says instead of asking us.

Agree.

You have nothing to worry about here from this situation. It sounds like you may have some good Catholic friends. Count your blessings. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
