So I was offered a job on Tuesday with a 50% pay raise and a great title at a renowned automotive company. However, I did not feel excited about the type of work, and something felt a little off about the hiring process. As far as I can tell, I was the only person they interviewed. Also, they said it requires a lot of travel, and I am not sure how I feel about that… I was also worried that this job might be stressful…

After praying about it, I decided not to take the job. However, I am not completely peaceful about the decision. Part of me is feeling like I missed out on a real opportunity.

How do I know if I properly discerned God’s will, or if I just let my fears cloud my judgment on this matter?

If it was God’s will, you would feel peace about accepting the job.

Being you’re uncomfortable, is probably the way God is telling you not to.

I think you made the right decision.

Worries over the amount of travel and the stress level are reasonable reasons to deny a job offer, along with a dislike for the type of work that will be demanded of you. You’re dislike for these things may have been God telling you that it is best that you retain your current position, as you eventually decided to do.

I have been reading about discernment of spirits as St Ignatius of Loyola taught, and this is one if the things he mentions: a disquietude about some past decision or action. Treat it as a temptation (pray, do penance…).

Are you serious about finding God’s will? God is not trying to hide from you, but to we are not able to hear until we train our spirit (heart) and open the connection to the mind. Jer.29:13 “And ye shall seek Me,and find Me,when ye shall search for Me with all your heart.” God does not reveal His will to those who are not 100% serious about it. But when you are in His will, it will be a source of unbelievable satisfaction.
It would be hard for me to tell you how to exactly go about hearing God. It is a personal thing, depending on your personality. But i can tell you that the greatest block is the logical western mind.
I might suggest some teachers. There was a 17th c.monk known as Brother Lawrence. He became famous for his prophecy and because he was always in the Presence of God. That is where we want to be . The Bible says Adam was in the Presence of God and he talked with God. You can read the advice of Brother Lawrence online or listen on YouTube.
A good teacher who can get you started is Mark Virkler. He has 4 keys to hearing God. Just put " hearing God’s voice" in the search bar on YouTube. Loads of things will come up. Just find what seems to help you.

Thank you all for the (name removed by moderator)ut.

It is Monday morning, and I still feel a little uneasy about my decision. I am second-guessing myself. Does the fact that I am still feeling uneasy mean anything in regards to discerning God’s will? Is it a form of temptation (I am tempted to call back and say that I changed my mind.) or is it God telling me I did the wrong thing? Thank you for any feedback.

Let it go.

You made the decision based on gut instinct and just go with it. Everyone gets second thoughts after making a big decision such as your did.

Not to be a doomsayer, but if you see the drop in the stock market currently taking place, that new job you could’ve taken might’ve been your path to the unemployment line as companies begin to downsize and new people go first.

Not saying this is going to take place, but its very possible.

Be at peace.

I would just go with what feels good. Sometimes i believe we do get warnings, but still, we need to be tuned in to God’s channel. We need to spend regular devotional time in the Word. We must pray in the spirit for at least an hour a day and a time of praise and worship. God ssays we must seek Him with all our heart, not half hearted. Yes its a lot,but it’s most worth is. This is the path of all saints. However, being a female, you have a great advantage. You are already more right brain than us left brain men. This is the creative intuitive side that connects with the spirit.
Is this making sense or is too complicated?

I’m a man… What made you think I was a girl?

It could be that you don’t like the offer that is being made, and you choose not to subject yourself to the demands it will have in travel. Nothing wrong with that.

You could have reason to believe that the “stress level” involved with the job is greater than most other places and do not wish to jump into a hostile workplace.

But you said it could be stressful – this could be either good or bad. No you don’t want to go where it will drive you nuts; I know that because I went to a place that drove me nuts and I got crazy and locked up and lost my 20 year lucrative career in engineering.

That said, patience that isn’t tested is only in your imagination. Nobody builds up emotional and spiritual gold by staying in places that “feel good”. This is different than being sensitive to the spirit, but I can’t exactly say how that works and I can’t claim that I always know the difference myself in any one situation. But I do claim there is a difference. The carnal (false) self and the spiritual (true) self (made in the image of God) may have different ideas about what feels good, and it can be tough to tease them out.

Kind of like giving to charity. Do you do it to feel good or look good, or to give a person a meal? Who can separate the wheat from the weeds – if we try to determine whether it is “selfish” motives or not, then the calculating mind and ego get back involved and muddies the waters even more. In the presence of potentially conflicting “selfish” v “selfless” motives, I claim it is impossible to completely isolate one as “the real motive” but it is all of them in concert – and to require knowing before acting on it, would prevent any act of charity at all.

So I’m just kind of blah blah blah here maybe, but consider this. Do you get physically strong by sitting in a recliner nearly all day, or by spending some time working out at the gym or doing farm work? Likewise, it is refreshing and comforting to be around people who create a “pleasant environment” but except for the very most toxic environments, a little social, emotional, and even spiritual “garbage” to have to learn to deal with is actually a requirement in order to require, stimulate, and guide spiritual growth and emotional stability in many circumstances.

1 Peter 1:6-7
In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

For example, get “vaccinated” by getting exposed to negativity and learning to deal with it, in order to stand up to potential huge negativity in the future. If you ever get thrown into the lion’s den, at least you may have practiced with some angry kitty cats.

Or like a rose. It is most beautiful and fragrant, when fed by the Best Fertilizer – so when people throw that stuff at you, your very nature as a rose assimilates and feeds off of it to make beauty.

My comments are based mostly on the “it might be stressful” part. If it is severe and known, then these are more in general and maybe don’t apply to this decision as much. Today we think that the way to the peace is to find a peaceful world to live in. But that doesn’t even work for Jesus, who said He was “in” the world but not “of” the world. If you can go into an environment with some conflict and not get caught up in it, that could be awesome. But if it’s a thing where you have to “play dirty” or lose out on raises, promotions, etc that’s a different thing entirely.

Hello again.

I just wanted to post a follow up. I am so depressed right now. I want to call them and tell them I changed my mind and hope that they still take me.

Everything that I don’t like about my current job is REALLY driving me nuts right now…

It seems like I am experiencing despair right now. Any prayers would be appreciated.

Do these feelings mean that I made the wrong decision?

Not necessarily.

Discernment can be difficult.

I think you have to evaluate your current situation. Is it bad enough to make you make the phone call to see if the job is still available ?

Try this way. Pray on it, before you call. Ask the Lord if its the right move, then let the job come through.

If its not available, it doesn’t matter either way, so pray for something else to take place.

A good book I’ve recently come across in discerning God’s will is;
“Abandonment to Divine Providence” by Jean-Pierre de Caussade

Unfortunately I don’t have the answer. I am only replying because you sound like me. I struggle with some things because I don’t trust myself. People say “put your faith in God” and that is wonderful. But we still have to make our own decisions and actions in life - - God doesn’t make our decisions for us.

I try to remind myself … if I make a mistake but I keep trying to listen to God and stay on the right path … then He will find a way to get me back on track. (but I do struggle when I see people whose lives are always a mess and never find peace, love, stability, etc…)

First of all I will say that your decision is made and you told them. Even if you did call them that doesn’t mean the position is still available. You may be beating yourself for no reason…

Second I would say that you turned the job down for reasons that you were serious about. You prayed over your decision and that is the best that you can do.

Do we ever discern God’s will correctly? That is my life struggle now

Just in case it may be regrets because of the raise, perhaps it might help you to know that I did accept such a job decades ago and I dreaded every moment of it. After mere months I was out of there. Though it cost me a pay cut, it was worth it to regain the direction I wanted for my career and for a style of life.
