i knelt today to receive our Lord and my priest said we should always stand. i have read we could receive our Lord either on our knees or standing… or i might be wrong and have understood that logic incorrectly… i have never felt so embarrassed ever!!! 😊

can someone help me understand what’s correct???

Embrassment is part of Chlristian life.Humility remains a good virtue.

You are certainly allowed to kneel and a document came out not too long ago that said a priest could not deny communion if you kneel.

You did nothing wrong, but he did (whether intentional or not).

Your profile does not say where you are. So I cannot address your question specifically. However for instance here in the U.S. The Bishops have determined that standing is the norm for receiving Holy Communion. The Faithful of the U.S. when attending an Ordinary Form Mass should follow this norm, instead of their own wims and fancy. When attending an Extraordinary Form Mass and an altar rail is used I personally choose to kneel, because kneeling at an altar rail is normal. However one may choose to stand at the altar rail also if they wish to receive in their hand.

Rome has instructed that anyone who does kneel at an Ordinary Form Mass without an altar rail in use is NOT to be denied Holy Communion. But should be spoken to at a later time and the norm explained. Suddenly kneeling when others might not be expecting you to do so may cause others to trip, stumble or fall, this would not be good.

I don’t think you did anything wrong, but if the practice in that parish is to stand, I’d speak with the Priest before the Mass to let him know your intention. I’ve thought of doing this too, I’ve recently just got myself receiving on the tongue.

Either standing or kneeling is ok. I believe where the problem starts is when everyone is going to the altar and is standing. Then one guy (you) kneels to receive. The person behined you probably has to move back because here come your feet. Probably better to go with the flow. If you want to kneel try going to a Latin Mass if you have them in your area. I do!

I agree with this, I commend you on your display of reverence, but it could cause problems if others behind you don’t expect this and could even trip. God bless you for showing respect to God and hope this is something you can work out at your church.

Our Bishop just sent us info in the bulletin reminding us to receive standing and than go back to our seats and kneel there.

But embarrassment? You shouldn’t worry. I tell my hub and son who have been to only one Mass so far (last week) that there are no Catholic monitors that will come and give them a Catholic demerit.

My dear brother in Christ,

Your loyalty is to be commended, but I am of the opinioin that doing what is morally right, trumps the position that you espouse.

This is not “a whim or fancy,” we are in the Real and actual presence of OUR GOD!

Because a group of errant bishops decided to effect changes neither desired nor approved by Rome, until an indult was granted…AFTER the practice had been forced into common useage, hardly seems to be a MANDATE that should blindly accepted.

For those of us with a sufficient understanding of Whom and What we receive in Holy Communion, it would be morally wrong to God and to our own conscience to NOT at least genuflect and receive Jesus on our tongues, and only fro a Bishop, Priest or deacon.

I’m fear dear Brother in Christ, attitudes like your supporting here were a huge factor in leading the Catholic Church in America to where we are today.

A 2006 Pew Report stated that in 1965 about 70% of professed Catholics regularly fullfiled their Sunday and Holy day Obligation, today that number is closer to 25%.

The same Organization did a study on the Sacrament of Reconcillation, and report that only about 10% of professed Catholics go to Confession, even once a year.

Anything, ANYTHING, taht returns holiness and piety to our “Gathering Spaces” and hets them closer to once again becomming the House of and for God, I’m in favor of.

The Catecheism…
"1181 A church, “a house of prayer in which the Eucharist is celebrated and reserved, where the faithful assemble, and where is worshipped the presence of the Son of God our Savior, offered for us on the sacrificial altar for the help and consolation of the faithful - this house ought to be in good taste and a worthy place for prayer and sacred ceremonial.” In this “house of God” the truth and the harmony of the signs that make it up should show Christ to be present and active in this place."

Brother, I have read mutiple times the Vatican Ii and Post Vatican Documents, as well as the GRIM, and other documents. I have never seen where one “is to be spoken to after the Mass.” Could you please direct me to such a teaching? Thank you.

May God be with you my friend,

Peace, love and joy!

It is correct to receive standing…however, you cannot be denied if you kneel.

Just follow the practice of that parish 🙂

When you convince the Bishops to change the norm and re-install the altar rails and require their use. I’ll be behind you 100%. Until then we need to stop trying to decide what is better for us and ignoring our Bishops. The Church is not a democracy, we don’t get to decide many things. The Successors of the Apostles lead the Church and we are expected to follow them. If they make a mistake in discipline and practice and we follow, God does not hole that against us.

thank you all for your replies…

all are good responses…i believe i should just remain receiving our Lord standing as to not cause anyone to trip… but i will speak to the vicar of my church (whom said i should stand always) when it is a right time… but until then i guess i will receive standing… my Lord knows how much reverence and love i show for Him at mass…

thank you all…

:blessyou:

Friend, as a FYI…

I have for many years, in various parishes, genflucted and received Jesus on my tongue. Has yet to be an issue. And seems a reasonable and safe practice.

Amen Brother!

But my understanding is that we are only obligated to follow bishops who are in Full Communion with Rome. It is my studied opinion, that what I advocate is a great deal closer to the mind and heart of the Magistrium than is current, forced un-pious practice.

God bless and keep you my friend.

As an FYI, I was blessed to have been taught for my highschool years by the Brothers of Holy Cross, so I hold 'Brothers" in very high esteem.

However I have learned the hard way, that none of us are perfect. I accept my responsibility to have properly informed conscience, and then follow it. I belive that is exactly what I am doing.🤷

I don’t kneel, but I just bow when I get to the priest to recieve.

Really. So the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is not in Full Communion with Rome, but you are by golly. The posture for receiving communion is made clear by the USCCB in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal as follows:
  1. The priest then takes the paten or ciborium and goes to the communicants, who, as a rule, approach in a procession.
The faithful are not permitted to take the consecrated bread or the sacred chalice by themselves and, still less, to hand them from one to another. The norm for reception of Holy Communion in the dioceses of the United States is standing. Communicants should not be denied Holy Communion because they kneel. Rather, such instances should be addressed pastorally, by providing the faithful with proper catechesis on the reasons for this norm.

When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister. The consecrated host may be received either on the tongue or in the hand, at the discretion of each communicant. When Holy Communion is received under both kinds, the sign of reverence is also made before receiving the Precious Blood.

The instruction is clear. It is still astonishing to me that some prefer rebellion and disobedience towards their bishops in order to preserve their preference for a particular posture; and one that isn’t even universally shared throughout history by the Catholic communion. Bizarre.

Congregation de Cultu Divino et Disciplina Sacramentorum:
…while this Congregation gave the recognitio to the norm desired by the Bishops’ Conference of your country that people stand for Holy Communion, this was done on the condition that communicants who choose to kneel are not to be denied Holy Communion on these grounds. Indeed, the faithful should not be imposed upon nor accused of disobedience and of acting illicitly when they kneel to receive Holy Communion.
