I originally posted this on the Family living part down below. This was my original post:
My best friend’s sister confided in me (I’m a nurse) that she is having premarital sex with a young man that will be going off to war shortly. The reason she spoke to me was because she feared she might be pregnant…she was looking for medical advice, etc. She then mentioned to me that she had taken the morning after pill and that it wasn’t the first time she had done so.
She says she’s in love with this boy 4 years her younger, and he is about to go off to war…a 4 year commitment.
Her family, devout catholics, have no idea about what is going on. I hinted to my best friend what she is doing and he said I should tell his parents the whole thing.
A month has gone by and this weighs heavily on me. I am torn between my religious beliefs (I am against that morning after pill and abortion as well) and my medical training and “patient confidentiality”.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore and I told her parents everything. She lied to them and asked me to cover for her. When confronted, I had to tell the truth. She was so angry, she even cursed me dead.
Now, I suffer terrible guilt, but why? Her parents thanked me for the truth saying that they would have eventually found out anyways. But I cannot help worrying that I have caused such grief and unrest in their home. I’m battling cancer, and I was so unsettled by her wishing me dead…
Did I do the right thing? Causing such turmoil? And why do I have the guilt?
People have responded to me, but they seem to be more concerned that I have possibly violated a HIPAA rule. I know where I stand there, I am asking, straight out, was it wrong for me to want to help this woman’s parents? My subsequent posts explain some more detail of what I said, and the background behind my involvement. I don’t want to take up your time repeating myself.
I spoke to my priest. He said that by the very act of taking that morning after pil with a possibility of ending a life, that the woman is excommunicated. As a parent, would you not want to know what has happened? And as a catholic, am I not responsible for her soul too?
Please help me.
