I work with heating contractors and other construction folks all day long. It’s a pretty salty bunch of guys and the language can often be pretty rough; however, I have noticed that they tend to tone it down a bit when I’m around, and I attribute this to the fact that I talk about my Catholic faith. Not in a preachy sort of way. It could be as simple as answering the question, “What are you up to this weekend?” with “Well, Sunday is always devoted to church, but Saturday I’m going fishing.” This lets them know that I’m a man of faith and they respect that even if they don’t believe yet. There’s been a few times when the GDs were flying around and I’ve said, “Fellas, let’s take somebody else’s god’s name in vain instead of our own.” That usually draws a few laughs as they start thinking about what god there could be. “Buddha Dammit” just doesn’t have the same effect. Live your faith openly and with love and you’ll be amazed how folks might change when they’re around you.
