Did I do wrong in having a Mass offered for a friend's father?

My friend’s dad died due to cancer yesterday while she was giving birth. I thought it would be nice to get her a little prayed card, so I stopped by the church. I ended up scheduling a mass in her dad’s memory… Now I don’t know if that was the appropriate thing to do… I’m not sure if it was ok as just a friend to do that or if that should be something a family member does. What should I do??
