I’ve started going to a Latin mass (Bishop-approved, BTW) at our cathedral downtown. They have confession on Sundays 30 minutes before the mass. I’ve been feeling lousy the last few days, so rather than go to confession Saturday, I figured I’d just do it today, on Sunday, before the mass.
But apparently none of the resident priests at the cathedral assist with confessions in this Sunday slot, so the visiting priest for the Latin mass has to do 30 minutes of confessions, then quickly change for the mass. We’re lucky if we can get in and out and the altar changed back around in time for the next N.O. mass.
Anyway, there was a long line at the confessional. Towards the end of my time in line there were seven people behind me and one little girl ahead. The woman that went in before the girl came out and said the priest could only take two more. The little girl and I stayed in line and everybody else walked off disappointed.
I felt really guilty and selfish, that I had denied these seven other people a chance to get into a state of grace and partake of the Eucharist. I wondered if I should’ve given my place in line up–but for whom? I even apologized for this in the confessional.I tried to confess quickly and even then the mass started late.
What would be the etiquette or standard operating procedure here? I did have mortal sins to confess, but I wonder if I was being selfish.
