Did I fully consent?

Hello, before I begin, I’d ask that I not receive replies saying “masturbation is not a mortal sin; it’s natural” because I don’t agree with that statement. I’m asking for guidance on whether or not the situation I ended up in constituted mortal sin. Another thing, I’m a 19 year old female and I’ve been dealing with panic disorder and depression since I started college, so I’m not sure how that affects me in this situation.

Before I joined the Catholic faith in 2008, I’d been masturbating for years. No one had ever told me it was wrong, but once I learned the difference and became baptized into the faith, I never committed the act again and had gone over two years without doing so. However, I’ve been constantly tempted through this time, including some VERY strong temptation. But I was proud over how I’d done and I knew that I never wanted to lose God again.

Last night, I’m not sure if I slipped up or not. After a funny yet VERY arousing conversation, I went to bed and was proud that I’d resisted some of the strongest temptation in my life. I laid there for a while, but then once I adjusted myself and stretched, I noticed that that particular stretch stimulated me. After that, I continued stretching because I liked how it felt but as soon as I realized what I was doing, literally seconds after, I stopped.

During these past few years, however, I’ve had multiple, reoccuring dreams (especially recently for some reason) in which I choose to masturbate even though I know that in doing so I lose God and Christ in that moment. What scares me is that, in this past instance, it felt like I was in one of those dreams, literally disconnected from reality. I thought things just like I do in those dreams, like “I’m really doing this; this is real, you’re really saying no to God.” As soon as I came back to my right mind, I realized what I had started to do and BEGGED forgiveness from God and ended up giving myself a mild panic attack over it.

I told myself that I didn’t mean to, that I was in some strange state of mind so that doesn’t constitute me fully knowing what I was doing, that just MINUTES earlier I had said NO, and that it was unfair for me to be dammed when I didn’t feel as if I’d DELIBERATELY CHOSEN to do so, that I had just slipped in that moment.

Naturally, my question is whether or not I fully consented in this matter. I really need external advice, so please answer truthfully. Though I must add, I cannot stress how much I felt as if I was literally disconnected with reality. I realized what I was doing, but it was passively almost. I literally felt like I was in one of my dreams again.

I won’t lie, going to confession and telling a male priest what happened DOES scare me a bit, but if I need to I won’t hesitate at all and will do it.

Thank you so much!

Firstly I shall just reiterate the 3 required things for a Mortal sin, in case you, or any other reader doesen’t fully know.

A Mortal Sin is a Sin that is;

Grave (against the Ten Commandments).
Committed in full knowlege.
Committed with full consent.

That said, I shall explain;

Masturbation itself is not a Mortal sin, unless it is also commited with full knowlege and full consent.

In the case of your dream, as we generally do not have full consent in dreams, sinning in a dream is not a Mortal Sin, although you may wish to speak to a Priest or Spiritual Director about this issue if it is particularily reccurrent, as it is a symptom of some underlying problem.

Secondarily,

In the case of you stretching, it is unlikely that this constituted a mortal sin as, when we are close to sleep we are not able to give full consent. However, only you truly know if you were fully able to give consent as to your actions, and at the least it is a venial sin.

In either case, if you believe yourself to be in a state of Mortal sin you should refrain from the Eucharist, and Confess. If you truly feel you did not consent, it would only be a venial sin, you should probably discuss the matter more with your Priest as it appears to be worrying you either way.

👍

I’m no expert, but if you thought you were dreaming, or were not fully conscious/aware, I don’t think it’s a mortal sin.

Worst case scenario you can tell the priest when you confess, and you will be forgiven. The way you described it though, don’t worry too much. 🙂

You know, that male priest has probably struggled with this very sin at some point in his life and has surely heard hundreds and hundreds of people, male and female, confess it. It’s huge to you, but commonplace to him. He’s there to dispense mercy, not to decide you’re awful and abnormal for this sin.

Spend some time in prayer remembering how much God loves you, how much you love Him and do not wish to offend Him. You will probably want to tell Him you are sorry if there’s any possibility you have offended the One you love. Go ahead and confess it as doubtful, and the priest will absolve you and help you discern the sinfulness.

You’ll be glad you did.

"If one has genuine doubt whether he or she has committed a mortal sin, then there is no mortal sin. " So says Father Jan Larson

You will feel much more peace if you put your conscience at ease through Confession. Even if you are not in mortal sin, the grace gained through Confession will help immensely. Better safe than sorry. Trust me on this - I hem and hawed for FIVE YEARS before finally going to Confession. Those were not fun years. Just about every week I wondered if I was committing sacrilege. Every time I committed M. again caused a new wave of terror and near panic.

I think I can relate to where you’re coming from (I am 22 and female). I too have struggled with M. for years and have been fighting it since becoming Catholic. I too have had dreams which involve M., found myself in the act, and been unsure where the line of consciousness truly is. My best guess would be you did not commit mortal sin BUT my best advice would be to go to Confession and explain the situation anyway. No outsider can evaluate the state of your soul - only you and your Confessor can do that.

This could happen again (it has happen to me several times over the past year). Not knowing whether you are in mortal sin is a terrible place to be - I’ve been there and strongly recommend you not find out for yourself. Get to Confession BEFORE receiving Eucharist again.

Hopefully you have a chance for Confession and can just get there. Remember - your Confessor HAS heard this sin before and should be very kind. If it will help you can use the phrase “I have committed the sin of impurity” which is understood to mean M. (see link below).
How do you confess an embarrassing sin?

Explain everything fully - if you think it necessary make an appointment for Confession instead of going at the usual time (so you won’t feel pressured to hurry). I didn’t explain fully the first time and was deemed to be in mortal sin - it was months later that I explain it all and my Confessor said M. is not mortal sin in my case (again with those months were not at all fun - horribly terrifying).
Don’t risk your soul, go to Confession and receive peace.
I hope this helps.

Look, let me give you some friendly advice here…

Priests hear that sin in Confession ALL the time. It’s not something new or unique to you. Just confess it. You do NOT have to go into the gory details. Just say, “I committed the sin of self abuse X times” sort of thing. He’ll know what you mean. Usually, too, you might consider that you consented to impure thoughts along with the act (how couldn’t you?). So, you could say, “I committed the sin of impure thoughts and self-abuse…”

The priest is NOT going to say, “You did WHAT?!” It’s a yawner, basically. Common as any other sin, really. But, it can be a mortal sin if it meets all the criteria. Even if it doesn’t, though, confess it anyway. That gives you more grace to resist it next time.

Here’s a couple of good .mp3 talks on the topic that you may find helpful:

And stay way away from porn. It’s like absolute poison for your soul and for your life.

Thank you all so very much! I’m planning to head to a nearby Catholic center where they hold confessions this Monday, though I am more and more certain that I didn’t fully consent. As many said, it will help me in the long run
