I attended Mass at a different parish today, and one of the ushers approached me and asked me if I wanted to carry the gifts at the offertory. I told him I wasn’t a member of the parish, so he went and found someone else.

Would it have been wrong if I carried the gifts? I just felt that it wouldn’t have been appropriate.

No, it would not have been wrong; but neither was it wrong to decline. When I attend Mass at our local Trappist abbey, someone is asked to take the hosts up; and as this is not a parish, no one (laity) “belongs” to it as a parishioner. But someone always takes them up.

It’s absolutely not inappropriate for a non-parishioner to participate in the offertory procession, but it is also not wrong to decline to do so. God bless. 🙂

It’s my understanding that even non Catholics can do this. It is done on my parish often.
