I went to confession and confessed lust in my heart, the priest comes from Lebanon, so English isn’t his first language. He asked what lust in the heart is and then inquired if its like looking at woman and I said yes… but I also suffer from same sex attraction and fantasized about men. I was too embarrassed to confess that because I have never told anyone I personally know that I have same sex attraction. I just confessed impure and uncharitable thoughts and lust in the heart (the details were lusting after women but not men as well).
Did I make a sacrilegious confession. I suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Scrupilosity, so my judgment is impaired…please tell me the absolution was valid, even though I didnt go in details.😊 I’m not a homo and not even sure if I am bisexual, all I know is that I am a man who has bisexual attraction but believes that homosexuality is wrong in accordance with the magisterium.😊

Bisexuality isn’t a sin but a cross, although acting on homosexual tendencies is a sin. As for whether or not your confession is valid, I’ll let someone who knows that answer. I suffer the same as you, so fear not, you are not alone in bearing these crosses to Calvary. But glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus, for He gives us a share in His sufferings and He permits us to suffer so that we might offer up our crosses to Him to help Him save souls.

You did good. Remember that the attraction in and of itself is not a sin, but acting upon those impulses are. You confessed the lust. You have not engaged in acts, so therefore your confession was good, as I understand.

so I didn’t need to specify that they were bisexual, instead of just heterosexual?

I would think it was a valid Confession. You don’t need to confess sins you didn’t commit, and you said you didn’t lust after men. The priest doesn’t need to know the rest unless you have sinned in that area. So if you are truly repentant, you are forgiven. I would think that being you are scrupulous and have OCD, it would benefit you if you focused on what the actual reality is, and not what might be or could be, and keep things as simple as possible in the Confessional. And once you have received absolution, that’s it. Thank God and don’t ruminate about your confession.

anyone know if I needed to specify that the lust was bisexual instead of jus heterosexual

no no, I originally confessed “impure thoughts…lust in my heart” but then the priest asked and I only confessed lusting after woman…but I lusted after men too but was too embarrassed to confess that.

was confessing “lust in my heart” fine or do I need the details too?

Regarding questions of what to confess, my policy is, “if I would confess it before the face of God in heaven, then I would confess it to my priest, a representative of God.”

I would say yes, and I have to stress, there is really no reason to be embarrassed. Priests have heard everything. God already knows your sins, it’s just a matter of getting you to admit it. 👍

Yes, I needed to specify that I lusted after men or Yes, your confession was valid?

I think your confession was valid because you were unsure, but next time, I would specify what type of lust it was.

Generally I would think that if the priest did not ask you to clarify/give more details, then it was fine the way you put it. Since it’s bothering you so much, you might want to think about confessing the details you’ve mentioned here the next time you go to Confession.

One more bit of advice: As soon as that type of thought enters your mind, nip it in the bud, right then and there. I myself believe even the thought of such things is a sin in itself. Also, the sooner you stop those thoughts from going through your mind, the easier it is to resist.

I have found that it’s a whole lot easier to stop the actual commission of sins, than it is to clean up one’s thoughts, and work on what’s in our heart. It’s a whole lot better to clean ourselves up as much as we can in this life, than to just sweep in under the rug, and have to deal with in Purgatory. Or worse.

Good on you for addressing this.

Thanx

I’m 19
I guessed that you were about that age from your comments. I do not believe that you are bisexual because of your age and based on the comments you wrote down. It is not uncommon to have these “attractions” at your age, it’s just a sign that there are physical changes going on in your body. In more simple terms: your body craves sex with a woman and because it is not getting it, there is hormonal unrest. I promise that you will grow out of it, just don’t give it much thought. Another issue is spiritual—during our teenage nears, God tends to first start pulling away, so we can learn to walk by ourselves. These thoughts won’t go away until you grow closer to God, my suggestion is to start seeking God out. You need a good spiritual advisor, someone who has a gift of discernment. Sit down with him and tell him everything you have told me and everything i have told you and he will guide you how to grow closer to God. Once you do, i guarantee you that all of this mess will go away. I hope I am not prying but I have seen this many times before and i know how much it must hurt inside 😦
Until then friend, do not give these stupid thoughts any more power of you.
I do believe that there are some people who are naturally homosexual, i just do not believe you have does inclinations, otherwise, you would not have spoken about them the way you did. Hope this helps. Sorry again to pry.

Where is joburg by the way?

Johannesburg is in South Africa…🙂

What do you mean when you say you dont believe I am bisexual…I have these attractions because of sexual and verbal abuse since my childhood…thank God I know why I am the way I am…I am close to God, its just that sometimes I can be a bit lukewarm or I get caught up in the moment…I am a seeker of knowledge and truth and its been proven to me over and over that the Catholic Church know what they are talking about. Praise God!🙂

Ok. I guess i was mistaken. Thanks for telling me where Johannesburg was. 🙂

From the way you said the priest asked you, it sounds to me he was just looking for clarification about what you meant by lust in your heart, not that he was asking specifically about generalities.

In any case, it might be helpful to talk to a priest about your feelings. Not necessarily as a component to confession, but just for some general support and advice.
