This is really bugging me so I thought I could get some insight from the people here. Anyways I missed the Saturday Vigil because of work, so I was going to go this morning. Anyways, I didn’t get to sleep until 5am, not because I chose to but because I just couldn’t sleep, I just lay in bed wide awake staring at the wall. So because of that I slept through my alarm, and would have been late for work, had it not been cancelled due to weather (thanks be to God). So my last option was to go to the only evening mass in my area, which starts in an hour, only my Mom refuses to take me, its pouring rain so I can’t walk or take the bus, and I have no other means of transportation. Howie Mandel asks, Sin or No Sin?

Sounds like no sin - you didn’t know your mother would refuse to take you. Next time ask her for cab fare 😉 and if you have any friends who go to that Mass you might get their phone number and hitch a lift.

And have two alarm clocks, one set 15 minutes after the other to stop you going straight back to sleep. I actually need to have one OUTSIDE my bedroom door to force me to get out of bed and turn it off.

Your mother may be the one guilty of sin. You tried your best.

If you feel strongly about it, bring it up in confession with your priest next time.

You didn’t intentionally miss mass, but you did have some very poor planning on your part.

My personal opinion is “no-sin”

Now what is in my case?

Definitely not a sin. It was not intentional. If it really bothers you talk to the priest next time you go to confession. In the mean time just have a heart to heart with the Lord, and ask Him to help you out of a sticky situation next time something like that happens. Say some extra devotional prayers, my fav is the Holy Rosary. (the Blessed Mother ALWAYS steers me in the right direction) The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy is also very powerful, and very appropriate being Lent.

I do that also. The problem is that I have become so used to getting up to turn off the alarm that I no longer have to fully wake up to do it. Now I get up, turn it off, and go back to bed without ever really being awake.

And I agree with everyone else. It doesn’t seem like you sinned, but you may want to mention it at confession just in case.

Eek! That’d be where having someone around who can tip a bucket of wter over you in the mornings helps.

Yeah that happened to me, apparently the morning it happened my mom said I got up, turned off the alarm but I remember nothing.

I am wondering why there does not seem to be the implication that the mother did something wrong.

My question is this: if it was pouring rain and you had to walk or take the bus to get to work, would you do so? If you would answer yes to work but chose to opt out for mass, then I would say that you have some culpability there.

It wasn’t a sin, since you sincerely tried to go. (I usually stay up all night if I’m not asleep by 4am- some people can do that easier than others- I’m a college student- I’m pretty conditioned to all-nighters:o )

There may have been a good reason Mom couldn’t take him then. Let’s not judge her without the facts.

I think that since your intent was to go to Mass that given these unfortunate circumstances that it is not a sin. I would still mention it at confession to be safe.

When the OP mentioned bad weather, knowing the horrible winter many of y’all have been having, I assumed that the weather really was bad and that that was the reason his mother refused. Which is fine.

Otherwise I would echo the other poster - we don’t know the circumstances, possibly the OP doesn’t either, so it’s not ours to judge.

There have been a few occassions the past couple of years (very few) that the weather was soooo bad that we didn’t have mass at all. (Got ahold of phone tree people and had most people informed) The person who lived within walking distance of Church would put a big note on the door. It was actually very dangerous if not impossible for most people to get out at all. I know that is a rarity but mother nature doesn’t usually care about Sunday Mass.😛

No my mom was guilty of sin…she didn’t take me because “its ok to miss mass once and a while” I argued and argued to no avail. The cafeteria sure is open in my house.

Did she miss mass herself? Does she normally provide you with transportation? Is there a REASONABLE way that you could go on your own? All of these things factor into it.

Her “it’s okay to miss mass once in a while” shows that she is guilty of not raising your within the Catholic faith properly – which she will have to answer for.

If you’d been scheduled to work that evening, what would you have done? Would you have taken the bus? Is Vancover like New York, where there’s public transportation readily available? Or is it more like St. Louis, where I’d have to walk almost a mile to get to a bus stop, and then take two busses to get to a church without walking another couple miles? I went to work in blizzard like conditions in New York (I had to climb out the front window once because the snow was blocking the door), but the subway doesn’t stop for snow.

It seems to me that if you made an honest effort to get to Mass, but it was beyond your control, you didn’t sin. You’re the only one who knows if there were any other options for you.

As for your mom, she’s not here to tell her side of the story, so I’ll still reserve judgement on her.
