Did I lie during confession?

Tonight I went to my parish church for confession. They had a few priests there and I got a priest who I did not know. While I was confessing my sins the priest would cut in and ask me some questions about the pertaining sin and then would allow me to resume. At one time while I was confessing he cut in and asked me how many times I had committed that sin and I said once because he caught me off guard. (I have surprisingly never had a priest ask me how many times I had committed a sin.) I knew in my mind the answer was twice but I said I had only committed it once and I felt that it was too late to go back and “change” my answer. (The preist talked pretty fast.) I know this may sound trivial but I wanted to know if my confession was still valid. I knew that I had committed the sin twice but the word “once” slipped out of my mouth. The good ol’ Catholic guilt has me wondering if I need to go to confession again. Thanks for your help!

Lying requires an intent to deceive. If you did not deliberately deceive the priest, then your confession was valid. Next time you go to confession, I recommend explaining what happened and confessing that you did indeed commit the sin more than once.
