Did I make a mistake?

On Friday (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) I didn’t realize until around 6:30pm that I hadn’t attended mass. There is a church near me that has a 9:30pm mass during the week (except for Friday’s as I unfortunately found out the hard way).

Anyway, that night, I had been planning on going to a play with some friends at 8pm but skipped it to go to the non-existent 9:30pm mass instead. I got to the church to find out that there was no mass and my heart sank. They were holding adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and I was able to spend an hour in prayer there, but I felt awful for forgetting about mass earlier in the day.

How grave is this? I later found out that another Church had mass at 7pm that I could have gone to but unfortunately I didn’t know about it early enough.

I received the Eucharist at today’s mass, but I’m not sure whether I should have or not…I am always very cautious about my state before receiving but now I am doubting my choice today.

What are your thoughts?

First, you sincerely forgot the holy day. No sin there.

Then, you acted in good faith to find a Mass, which, unfortunately, was not held. No sin there.

Finally, you spent time in adoration. A positive good. I think you’re just fine.

I agree you made an honest mistake in forgetting. You can confess it as a venial sin because we are required to attempt to remember the churches holy days. You made a concerted effort to save the day and did spend the time in adoration.

In future , write Holy Days of Obligation on the Calendar or get a church calendar or call a head of time when you are deciding where to go.
