Did I miss Mass?

I go to Mass several times a week and always for the Sunday Mass. I have been taking care of my grandson for the past week and we went to Mass Sunday morning. He has never been to church and he is 4-years-old. My daughter and son-in-law never go to any church. I am the only Catholic in the family.

Anyway, my grandson started crying and said he was scared and he wanted to go home. I took him into the vestibule (we have no crying room or children’s facility) but I couldn’t get him to calm down. He kept begging to leave. I wanted to stay and had every intention to go to Mass. I took him home.

Am I in mortal sin? I sure hope not since I went to Mass this morning and received Communion.
 
The care of a small child is a legitimate reason to miss Mass. You didn’t do anything wrong. For the future though and for your grandson’s sake, I cannot recommend allowing him to dictate whether or not you stay for Mass.

If he stays with you again for a weekend, perhaps you can prepare him for Mass by taking him to the church on Saturday, familiarizing him with the grounds and with the inside of the church, and explaining to him what will be expected of him (that he sit quietly, perhaps with a child’s missal or a quiet toy).
