There is no way I can charitably say this, but I think it needs to be said. You need to get a sense of perspective. There’s certainly no comparison between what you witnessed and a priest asking for more abortions. If the latter happened I would walk out and go read the sign in front of the church to ensure it was a Catholic one, because I doubt I’d ever hear that in a Catholic church.
I’ve had plenty of moments where I have cringed at parish Masses. To err is human, to really screw up it seems, takes a liturgist.
But the abuse in your case seems to be so minor as to be nearly trivial; I have seen much, much worse. You didn’t walk out of bad show or movie.
You walked out on OUR LORD. He suffered on the Cross for our sins, and that includes minor (and even major) screwups in the liturgy. If abuse is systemic I agree one needs to talk to someone, but nobody is going to be 100% perfect, 100% of the time.
I recall once at Vigils at the Benedictine abbey where I’m affiliated; the lector used the wrong scripture reading. When I asked afterwards why Fr. so-and-so read the wrong reading, I got a very simple and humbling response: because Fr. so-and-so made a mistake. In another hilarious incident, the priest proclaiming the Gospel proclaimed the Gospel for the wrong year. The homilist was another priest. Now that really threw him off, as the homily was based on the correct Gospel for that year. Mistakes do happen.
I’m sure in the Mass you were at, no harm was intended. And very little harm was done. Mistakes and mis-judgments happen, even rubrical ones.
