This morning after church, I came home and my mom stated we should go get something to eat. Against my better judgment, I said ok and we went DQ and got something to eat. I felt guilty doing so I because I don’t know if I committed a mortal sin doing so on Sunday. My heart is telling me no, but for some reason my conscious is telling me yes. Does that make sense??? Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated! I won’t be able to attend confession until next Saturday, but I attend daily mass as able and am planning to go again on Tuesday. I really want to receive our Lord but am unsure if I can. Please Help!!!

what sin do you think you committed? Eating after Church? I mean we used to go with the priest to lunch all the time after Mass

Actually Sundays are feast days so you don’t have to abstain from anything (within reason of course).

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! 🙂
I guess I thought that I was sinning in the sense of going out to a restaurant and eating. I have been hearing all over this site that no excess work should be done on Sunday–including going out to a restaurant and eating. Am I wrong???

I have often thought about it too, about shopping on Sunday. I don’t think it constitutes as a sin and definitely not something you need to confess (it might be a venial sin, which are absolved through attending Mass), but I think it is more a personal choice in the matter. Tell me are you a convert at all or do you attend an Ordered Parish?

Well, my story is kind of long.

But, to make a long story short…

I was raised (baptized, first reconciliation, first communion) in the Catholic Church up until I was about 11 or so, and then we (parents and children) moved to another state and quit going to Church. I never considered myself as leaving the Church we just simply never went, and as such, I lost a lot of the belief systems and customs. Fast forward 12 years to about 4 months ago. I had a strong desire to ‘return’ to the Church, and am now currently in RCIA to complete my initiation by Confirmation. I have joined many groups and am volunteering as much as I can. I attend daily Mass as able (I work 12 hour shifts so can only attend on my days off) attend reconciliation every other Saturday, spend one hour a day (as able) in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and just generally enjoy and strive for anything that can help me grow in my faith. I am sure I could go into much more detail, but that is pretty much the whole of the story.

Back to my Did I Sin?? Statement…Maybe that is just part of my Scrupulosity coming out in me??? Maybe there will be others on this site who do think that eating out is a sin??? I am open and waiting for all responses. I still, I feel, have a lot to learn about our faith.

Thanks again for replying,
And
God Bless

i’m pretty sure it’s not a sin. Once or twice a month we’ll go out to lunch with my Aunt after Mass. I don’t think it constitutes as work. Actually, if you think about it, you’re working less because you didn’t have to prepare that meal.

It is certainly NOT a sin.

For example, Jesus and his disciples went out in the fields for food on the sabbath.

Eating out is not the physical labor we are called to abstain from. If that were so, they should pay me when I go to a restaurant!

Don’t worry about it! Many families have traditions of going out to eat after Sunday Mass or going home to cook a big Sunday dinner. This is what the Lord’s Day is meant for!

"The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath." (Mark 2:27)

I think you worry too much. Sunday…while being a day of worship is also a day of family activity, and that can include going to a restaurant to share a meal with family.

You did absolutely nothing wrong… Treasure the time with your family…it is fleeting and you need to treasure it when you can!!

Did you get the Pancakes at IHOP?? Mmmmm, good!🙂

Gosh the lines at our local IHop are the longest after Sunday masses. When I was a kid, Sunday was the day, once a month, when we all went out to dinner to give Mom a break from cooking. There is no sin in going out to eat on Sunday. Find a restuarant that serves a great Sunday brunch. I wish I didn’t have to work on Sunday so that I could go.

Going to a restaurant on a Sunday is NOT a sin.

I could not possibly see how you sinned. Ever since I was a little girl my family always had a “special” breakfast after Sunday Mass. It was a celebration of the Sabbath and having reveived the Body and Blood of Jesus. Now that I am older my my friend and I go for coffee and a chat after Sunday Mass.
If I go to Mass during the week I will have a coffee on my own as celebration, for taking part in the wonderful miracle of the Eucharist.
Jesus wants us to be happy, so I imagine He would be pleased at our celebration, for Him 👍 👍

From the Catechism:
**2185 **On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body.123 Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.
The charity of truth seeks holy leisure- the necessity of charity accepts just work.124 ****2186 **Those Christians who have leisure should be mindful of their brethren who have the same needs and the same rights, yet cannot rest from work because of poverty and misery. Sunday is traditionally consecrated by Christian piety to good works and humble service of the sick, the infirm, and the elderly. Christians will also sanctify Sunday by devoting time and care to their families and relatives, often difficult to do on other days of the week. Sunday is a time for reflection, silence, cultivation of the mind, and meditation which furthers the growth of the Christian interior life.

Sunday is not what Pharisees made of Sabbath. It’s not a day when you shouldn’t sweat. God comes first, no work should be done that hinders His worship or prevents relaxation of the body and mind. Going to a restaurant is a recreational activity and going to a restaurant with your mother on Sunday is a very good way of conserving your family times and enjoying a holy day with your family.

You did nothing wrong. Most likely you did a good thing, actually.
