Hey, I just graduated high school and we had this all night party for our school and we get fake money by doing activities throughout the night. So, I had earned enough money to purchase a microwave. Now, I am commuting and going to college this year so I decided to return the microwave back to the store where it came from. I had gotten a credit at the store for where it was purchased and used the money to buy a game?

Do you guys think this is a sin? Is it a sin to play the game because that’s where the money came from?

Umm, well, was it legal?

If you illegally used fake money to get a microwave, of which you ‘sold’ for credit to buy a game, then yes I would say this could be sinful.

During the party, everyone earned fake money by doing activities. I had received enough fake money to purchase the microwave. I got $5,000 in fake money from someone I sort of know, which said they had the extra money.

I personally would say that you did not sin in this instance. The item was not stolen. The store was paid at the time of the purchase of the microwave, and you simply traded one piece of merchandise for an equal amount of credit towards an item at the same store. The microwave will be resold. This is similar to when a newly-married couple returns one of the three extra toasters they were gifted for a merchandise credit.

However when you move out of your parents’ home, you may wish that you had kept the microwave. 😉

once you receive a gift it is yours to do with as you wish.
as long as you know it was new, never used, you had the box and the right store and they accepted it as a return, no it is not a sin, perhaps not the best etiquette.

JakeSim:Are you saying you used conterfiet money and the store let you buy a microwave? How could the money pass unnoticed?

Well the box looked like it had been old but the guy at the return counter didnt say anything towards if it was new or used I think. He asked what was wrong with it and I lied and said I did not like the style. Is that a sin?

Also, is it a sin that I asked for extra fake money and got the item and then sold it?

Also, I did not use counterfeit money at a real store. Relate this to Monopoly. I received fake money by doing activities at a graduation all-night party, which was held at the high school, and earned $96,000 in fake money and asked if someone if they had some extra, so I could reach $100,000 in fake money. I’m not 100% sure if the amount I had gotten was $96,000 exactly but the person gave me $5,000 in fake money I think.

At the prize section of the party was a bunch of prizes. Including the microwave, which was $100,000 in fake money.

Also, I was assuming that the microwave from Target as it had a sticker with a bunch of info and at the top it said Target Stores so I assumed it belonged to Target. I brought it there and they accepted it.

Jake,

Do you tend towards scrupulosity? You didn’t do anything wrong. If the store policy allowed for a return without a receipt, then you were fine to do with the prize as you pleased.

For future reference, if you return something and they ask you what is wrong with it and nothing is defective, you can simply say that nothing is wrong with it but you do not want it. They are asking if something is wrong to know whether or not to put it back on the shelf. You don’t have to have a reason or give a reason to return something. Simply, “I don’t want it” will do.

No. If the other person didn’t want their money they were within their rights to give it away.

Hmm, do you think lying to them is a sin however?

What exactly do you mean to “tends towards scrupulosity?” I don’t know if I get what you are asking here. Do you mean if I personally think it’s scrupulous obsessions?

Are you scrupulous in your daily life? The sorts of questions you are asking lead me to believe you are-- seeing big sins where there aren’t any. I suggest you talk things over with your priest.

I believe I am pretty scrupulous. I do have OCD, and am on medication for it. Lately the OCD (if it is) has been bad.

Then I suggest you not ask “is it a sin” questions here on this forum and instead discuss them with your spiritual director who is equipped to help you with your OCD and scrupulosity. You need the help of a priest who will work with you over time, not random people on the internet.

Hey 1ke,

Once again, I’m gonna say thank you an that I appreciate it, although I think I feel like I’m lying if I say I’m questioning it. But, thank you and I appreciate it!

Also, this is random but what time zone are these forums in?
