Did I Steal?

Today I was at a restaurant. I ordered my food like I should. Then I was asked my age (if you’re under a certain age, it was five dollars less). Well, I told my correct age. I was one year over the requirement for a special deal.

Then the cashier said that he’d mark me down for the deal since I was ‘close enough.’ I asked him if he was allowed to do that since it didn’t feel right. He said something like he was going to give me a break.

I was ready to pay my full amount, but I didn’t want to argue with him in public. So, did he just commit an act of charity, or did I help him steal five dollars from the company?

I would say you did your portion. You didn’t meet the qualifications, but he offered you the break and you at least attempted to verify that he had the authority to do so. If it makes you that uncomfortable, you can always thank the person and ask to pay the full price next time…

you are not responsible for what other people decided to do, so unless you are this guy’s boss and no for a fact he does not have the discretion to offer a discount, forget it

I would assume the cashier had the authority to do this, so that no one did anything wrong. If it keeps bothering you though, you could always just send the money to the restaurant in the mail, then forget the matter.

I am confused. In your 1st statement, you say that you qualify since you are 1 yr OVER the requirement. Then in your 2nd statement, you say that the cashier said “Close enough”…so which is it???
