I gave up sweet things today.

my mom was cutting some cake andleft it on the counter. I went ot get some water and accidentally touched the side of the cake so got some cream on my finger, which I just licked off

I guess as that:thumbsup: happened, I knew I should have just washed my hands instead but was a bit lazy i suppose

or am i being scrupulous/

if i did break it, can i still change it to something else?

In Canada, the Friday penance is not specified, only that in place of abstaining from meat, an act of piety or charity may be substituted.

The requirement does not say “abstain from sweets”. If you voluntarily chose that, fine, but changing your mind or breaking it doesn’t mean it suddenly became sinful. The penance is not specified. Which means you can select any other act of charity of piety to substitute for the abstinence from meat. Like a Rosary, for example, or hear a Mass.

So for Canadians, don’t worry about having broken anything. Just do something.

Lent is over…but anyway …licking some cream from a cake by accident is not a sin.

Angell, just say you’re sorry to Jesus, and don’t worry about it at all.

Are you familiar with Librivox? They have audio versions of many old books, including Light and Peace by Fr Quadrupani. I have been learning a lot from this little book which distills a lot of information from other books as well as adding his own.

ETA: Here is a link to the page. Below the links to individual sections is a link to download the entire book, but what I did was to get an app (actually 2!) for my iPod. They were free. So if you have a smart phone, see if you can get the app 🙂

If you just have an MP3 player like I used to, try downloading the whole book and see if that works. It would work sometimes on mine but not always.

It’s a Friday in Canada - it’s still a day of penance. 😉
From the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops website
Acts of penance: We can do at least one of these good actions each Friday:
  • Penance. Abstain from meat, or some other form of food, drink or entertainment.
  • Prayer. Take part in a service of worship with others, or pray with our family, or spend some extra time in personal prayer.
  • ***Good works. ***Do good to others by visiting the sick or aged, helping those in any need, or by contributing time or money to a work of charity.
You voluntarily gave up sweets for today, your choice for penance. You choose to lick the icing off your finger rather than washing it off. A sincere “I’m sorry” to Jesus, a promise to do better, and let it go.
Doing penance is not a form of self punishment, or an unhealthy desire to inflict pain on ourselves. Rather, we do penance in order to discipline ourselves (1 Corinthians 9.24 27) and to live in union with Jesus who suffered to save the world. We offer our penitential actions in obedience to the gospel commands, so that our Lord may purify our love for him and make us stronger in the service of God and the people of God. We freely offer our penances to help make up for sin in our own lives and in the lives of others.
