Did Jeff Sessions make illegal border crossings a sin?

I always thought coming to this country illegally was at least a venial sin but but when you chose to go around the border crossing or don’t show up for your asylum hearings for two years out; are you committing a more serious sin?

““If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a Monday address at the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies’ 2018 spring conference. “If you don’t like that, then don’t smuggle children over our border.””

You’re conflating two different things.

Crossing the border is an act. We cannot determine morality simply from that. What was their intention? Is there mitigating circumstances?

Then, smuggling children.
Again, intention. Are you trying to save them from drug violence or sell them as sex slaves?

circumstances, intentions, and mitigating factors are key in situations like this

I think Jeff Sessions has to think about the morality of taking children away from their families. Sometimes the punishment is worse than the crime.
 
So are you saying we should let them run free in America and use our food stamps, education, health care, and church programs to wait out their asylum court hearing?

So you think it is right for the government to separate the children from the parents as punishment? That is cruel and inhumane.
 
You really think Sessions and the Trump admin are doing this out of concerns for the poor migrants? Get real.
 
It doesnt matter if worse abuses are done elsewhere or by other administrations. It is wrong.
 
Sounds good, but I think this is the latest (and lamest) rationalization going around.
 
I think people that don’t want to be separated from their children shouldn’t do things that could lead them to being separated from their children.

Illegal immigrants get the boot.

Although I’d also be in favor of sending entire families back in the name of keeping them together. You should have to have one citizen for a parent to get citizenship rather than just being born on American soil.
 
It happens in all aspects of life & crime in the US. People commit crimes, go to jail, and their children are placed with others for care. Negligent mothers or fathers have their children taken away all the time.

The idea that the illegal immigrant should get a pass just because well, they feel they deserve a better life in another country, can’t get in legally so they sneak in.

Then who else should get a pass? The drug addicted prostitute mom? Maybe she just wants a better life for herself & her kids. Or how about the sexual pervert dad whose wife lets him molest their kids? Should they get a pass?

Where is that line? And who gets to set it? A liberal or a conservative? You or me?

I raised my kids as a single mom. I never wanted my kids taken from me. I never placed myself in a situation where that would ever be possible. It’s all about making choices.

I feel like this thread is just you trying to give spiritual weight to your political opinions.
 
You did read the bible verses and the catechism at the top? The bible teaches to obey civil laws. I read in EWTN a priest that said it was a venial sin at least but then EWTN took Father’s answer down. It makes sense that if you are not in danger and not in hunger then you are an OPPORTUNISTIC looking to advance in someone’s else’s country to make profit.
 
Illegal migrants are now sending more money home knowing they might be deported and will have to live off of that money. Are they really seeking asylum like the Catholic church says or are they looking to send money back to Mexico and then travel back to visit or stay with all the money???
