I was listening to a radio program yesterday in which they were talking about St. Joseph and how he was the earthly father of Jesus. That got me to thinking, and this may be a seemingly simple question, but did Jesus already know how to behave properly, be respectful, etc or did he have to be taught those things by Mary and Joseph?

He was a man like us in all things but sin. This is a fact, this is a great mystery of faith. What you ask is debatable, but not necessary for our salvation to know. Son though he was he learned obedience for what he suffered, and was heard for his reverence…This Scripture seems to point that He he struggled to progress, succeed, fell down and got back up in life, just as we did. His knowledge may have been perfect, but he tried, failed, and tried again, like all men. But if his knowledge was perfect, yet he stil struggled to master the human instrument, think of what infinite suffering and degradation that must have been for him! This makes the scripture, Son though he was, he was he learned obedience for what he suffered, and was heard because of his reverence, that much clearer and more touchingly real to our hearts to know that Our King Jesus, Infinite God and Perfect Man did all these things for us.

Both. In his divine nature, he knew everything. In his human nature, he had to learn just as all of us do.

As a human being he does not know that. As God, his knowledge is coterminous with the Father’s.

My is that he probably “knew” in the sense that he received wisdom and revelations.

But his Natures both human and divine are hypostatic and cannot be separated, nor divided one from the other as He is a divine person with two perfect natures. He is whole being. Could it be in strict obedience as Son to The Eternal Father he just would not reveal it to us?

Could be. But Jesus’ human nature is human, and therefore limited in the same way human natures are limited. His human knowledge is limited. His divine knowledge is not. In fact, as the divine Word, he is the perfect expression of the divine intellect.

He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.
Luke 2:51-52
This, and similar passages, raises the question. I am not sure how Wisdom could advance in wisdom, but it is a question I “keep in my heart” in imitation of Mary. I hope it brings me closer to Jesus.

He learned.

He had his mother & father to model after and he chose good and shunned evil on every occasion throughout childhood.
