Did Jesus believe He was serving a greater Being (His Father) than Himself? I see conflicting messages in the Bible.

Nowhere in the NT (not even in many apocryphal writings) is Jesus stated to be made the Messiah after His resurrection. Jesus had always been the Son of God and the Messiah prior to His death; this is why His apostles - at their first meeting with Him - exclaimed:

Jesus’ resurrection made Him neither the Son nor the Messiah, but only stood for God the Father’s seal of confirmation and the Messianic declaration to believers in Christ.
If Jesus refused to go on the cross and went on to raise a wife and kids I bet God would find another Messiah.
You misinterpret Hebrew 5: 8-9. The real concern of that passage is Christ’s comparison with Aaron in terms of priesthood.

The epistle to Hebrews refers to Jesus’ humanity in the light of His incarnation along with the reason for it:
You are talking about other verses in Hebrews, I don’t know what you mean by humanity in light of incarnation. He was human obedient to God. So this says Jesus was obedient to God and being the perfect servant he was given power to save people.

Hebrews 5:8-9 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
The way you pose this question is misleading. We do not claim that God **had to **- or felt obliged - unite His divinity with human nature! God only **chose **to do so out of His love for mankind.

John 3: 16 For** God so loved the world**, as to give his only begotten Son: that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting.
How does being a man show God’s love? To me this says God provided a human leader to show His love and save us using God’s power.
No one could reveal God to mankind as well as He Himself. This is why God finally chose to come to mankind as a human through the incarnation:

John 1: 18 No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the Bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Why couldn’t God just work through an existing human to reveal Himself? Jesus had to have a human body and nature anyway, why does Jesus need to be born a God for God to dwell in and work through him?

“I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” Jeremiah 17:20

Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds." Revelation 2:23

There is nothing called “had to”. There is what scriptures say God did.

God gave Jesus authority to search hearts and minds so he can judge people. Which implies Jesus wasn’t born a God who always had that power.

John 5:26-27 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

One thing that you have to understand is that God’s knowledge is incomprehensible to the human mind. You are asking about the Holy Trinity; the Father and Son are One, of the same substance and Divinity with the Holy Ghost. We are truly unable to comprehend the Trinity, and God’s Will for that matter.

If I remember correctly Saint Thomas Aquinas was trying to comprehend the Holy Trinity, and one day he walked down to a beach side. Upon walking he came across a little boy who was filling a hole in the sand with the ocean water. St. Thomas ask him what he was doing, and told him does he not know that he will be unable to fill that hole with the ocean for it seeps through the sand back into the ocean. The little boy then turned and replied “I will fill this hole with the entire ocean, before you will understand the Trinity.”

Your asking questions that are on the mysteries of the bible, you are looking at the literal sense, but are overlooking the mystical sense. Unfortunately the mystical sense of the bible can only be revealed by God, and God only chooses a select few who he will bestow the Grace upon to understand the true meaning of the scriptures. And He will only explain certain scriptures, an example would be Ven. Mary of Agreda. God revealed many mysteries to her, out of the Proverbs (one that she speaks about) He revealed that of Chapter 8, 22-31 only, He chose to reveal that section alone.

As I read through this tread I noticed that you keep drawing yourself further into confusion, I placed the story on St. Thomas for a reason. For one the little boy was our Lord (Jesus), who was telling St. Thomas that no matter what he does he will never (humanly) understand the Holy Trinity, and to stop trying to figure it out. The reason for this was so he would not drive himself crazy, or lose Faith, but to just except it for what it is.

Then all the churches will know that** I am he **who searches hearts and minds, and **I will repay **each of you according to your deeds." Revelation 2:23

John had the ability to say " all the churches will know that God gave me the power to search the hearts"

But Jesus is saying : I AM HE who searches, when God says He is the One who does this.

Besides, to search the hearts and minds of all people through ages till eternity means Jesus is both omnipresent and omnipotent.

“And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him WHO FILLS ALL IN ALL.” Ephesians 1:22-23

“Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 23:23-24

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God , and the Word was God. He was **in the beginning with God **; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him…

and then John says :

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

Now you must convince us that the monotheistic authors of the Bible were actually saying that God made Jesus another God ( eternal, omnipresent, omnipotent, Judge of souls, giver of peace, giver of wisdom, the Creator of everything, the Alpha and Omega, to say a few) and to tell us “why” He did this, because it is my turn to say “it doesn’t make sense” for Jews to say Jesus is made God with capital G .

And here another food for thought.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Wisdom of Solomon 9:9 With you (God) is Wisdom, who knows your works and was present when you made the world.

John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Proverbs 8:35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. (1:11)
1 Enoch 42:2 Wisdom went forth to make her dwelling among the children of men, and found no dwelling place.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Sirach 24:8 The one who created me assigned a place for my tent. And he said: ‘Make your dwelling in Jerusalem.’

John 14:15 If you love me, you will obey what I command.

Wisdom of Solomon 16:18 And love of Wisdom is the keeping of her laws, and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality.

The Word was in the beginning (John 1:1)
Wisdom was in the beginning (Prov. 8:22-23, Sir. 1:4, Wis. 9:9)

The Word was with God (John 1:1)
Wisdom was with God (Prov. 8:30, Sir. 1:1, Wis. 9:4)

The Word was cocreator (John 1:1-3)
Wisdom was cocreator (Prov. 3:19, 8:25; Is. 7:21, 9:1-2)

The Word provides light (John 1:4, 9)
Wisdom provides light (Prov. 8:22, Wis. 7:26, 8:13; Sir. 4:12)

Word as light in contrast to darkness (John 1:5)
Wisdom as light in contrast to darkness (Wis. 7:29-30)

The Word was in the world (John 1:10)
Wisdom was in the world (Wis. 8:1, Sir. 24:6)

The Word was rejected by its own (John 1:11)
Wisdom was rejected by its own (Sir. 15:7)

The Word was received by the faithful (John 1:12)
Wisdom was received by the faithful (Wis. 7:27)

Christ is the bread of life (John 6:35)
Wisdom is the bread or substance of life (Prov. 9:5, Sir. 15:3, 24:21, 29:21; Wis. 11:4)

Christ is the light of the world (John 8:12)
Wisdom is light (Wis. 7:26-30, 18:3-4)

Christ is the door of the sheep and the good shepherd (John 10:7, 11, 14)
Wisdom is the door and the good shepherd (Prov. 8:34-5, Wis. 7:25-7, 8:2-16; Sir. 24:19-22)

Christ is the way to truth (John 14:6)
Wisdom is the way (Prov. 3:17, 8:32-34; Sir. 6:26)

Let’s see what Paul says as well in this regard:

Colossians 1:15-18 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: **all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. **And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Compare:

Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God…

Wisdom of Solomon 7:26 (Wisdom is) a spotless mirror of the working of God, and an image of his goodness.

Colossians 1:16 …by him all things were created…

Wisdom of Solomon 1:14 “for he created all things that they might exist”

Colossians 1:17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Wisdom of Solomon 1:7 …that which holds all things together knows what is said…

In light of this clear parallelism between the essence of God (Wisdom) and Jesus, it is more than clear what the Jewish authors of the NT are saying : Jesus is the very Word/Wisdom of the Father, before the creation of this world.

God did it in the Old Testament because Jesus didn’t exist yet. Now God gave Jesus the authority to do it. That’s what the NT says.
Besides, to search the hearts and minds of all people through ages till eternity means Jesus is both omnipresent and omnipotent.
It means God gave Jesus the power to judge everyone. If Jesus was omnipotent by his own power as a God, another God wouldn’t need to give him anything.

“And he (GOD) put all things under his (JESUS’) feet and (GOD) gave him (JESUS) as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him (THE GOD) WHO FILLS ALL IN ALL.” Ephesians 1:22-23

“Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 23:23-24

Still God filling all in Ephesians. And so all these verses go that you present to me.

And they don’t answer any of my questions, what exactly does it do for God to become a man. How does that save people.

As opposed to God appointing a purely human king in Jesus and giving him a lot of power to judge, defeat evil people, etc.

We are truly unable to comprehend the Trinity, and God’s Will for that matter.
I can comprehend fine the idea of one God giving a lot of power to a 100% man so he can rule like God over us though still human, so that’s what I stick with.

I just want to know if any Trinitarians have some new reasons why it is necessary for God to be born as a man to save people. They say, to unite human and divine, but ok, exactly what does that do.

As opposed to my belief that God just appointed Jesus as a human judge that decides if people deserve mercy, that’s how Jesus really saves us. He doesn’t send us to the Lake of Fire if we have repented sufficiently. So of course we have to believe in that judge, if we ignore him or mock him he isn’t going to feel very merciful.

So I guess my belief about how Jesus saves is more practical than mystical.

God did it in the Old Testament because Jesus didn’t exist yet. Now God gave Jesus the authority to do it. That’s what the NT says.

which Jesus didn’t exist yet? the Word/Wisdom of God? or the man Jesus? because if you are talking about the Wisdom/Word of God, you will have to answer John and Paul who said He existed in the beginning, who made every creation on earth, who is the Alpha and Omega, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. ecc

For by him were all things created, ( means Jesus is before creation and He created everything) that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him (ditto), and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

and if God gave Him this power, why does Jesus say I Am HE who searches when He knows only God does this unless He is equating Himself with the only One who does it? because Jesus did not say " i can search" but He says I AM HE …in other words, I Am *THE *One…can an inspired author write in this way and still claim He meant Jesus Is not divine? or are people stupid? and does it mean Jesus was made by God omnipotent, omnipresent, creator, judge, giver of wisdom and peace, in addition to being the Alpha and Omega ?
It means God gave Jesus the power to judge everyone. If Jesus was omnipotent by his own power as a God, another God wouldn’t need to give him anything.

I can comprehend fine the idea of one God giving a lot of power to a 100% man so he can rule like God over us though still human, so that’s what I stick with.

He did give power to Moses and David and Abraham and and and…is ANYONE of them said to be omnipotent, omnipresent, creator of everything, judge of souls, Alpha and Omega ecc?
I just want to know if any Trinitarians have some new reasons why it is necessary for God to be born as a man to save people.

He did give power to Moses and David and Abraham and and and…is ANYONE of them said to be omnipotent…
Where does it say Jesus is omnipotent?
to do this He must be omnipotent, omnipresent, all-knowing and He must have the same Wisdom of God in order for His judgment to be just.

In other words, He must be God.
Why does Jesus have to be God to be able to know God’s will?

John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

If Jesus was God he would seek his own will because it would also be God’s will. But he doesn’t, he seeks God’s will. So that makes God’s will greater than his own.

So you didn’t really answer my question, in fact you say opposite of what the NT says. What reason is there for God to be born incarnate as a man?

Why can’t God just dwell in a regular human and give that human superhuman powers to do all the things God can do? Except for of course BE God since that is God’s job and Jesus said so, Jesus seeks God’s will not his own will.

What does God uniting humanity and divinity do? Adam had everlasting life and God didn’t need to unite anything.
Adam lost the everlasting life. How do you suppose we get it back?
Where does it say God sacrificed Himself?
In the same places where we’ve shown you that Jesus is God (ie, Jesus possesses the divine nature). I know you disagree - so let’s not continue on that thought until we find common ground.
God is the one who had to be appeased, He makes the rules. How would sacrificing Himself satisfy the wrongs others have done?
O’ - if only you understood love like the way we do.

Can I take you back to the Old Testament; Do you agree that God wanted a lamb to be sacrificed for the great passover in the book of Exodus? How do you suppose that sacrificing a lamb would appease God; We don’t know. But it’s God’s plan and it works.

We are judged by Jesus to be not guilty of sin and allowed entry.

Well yeah, the Bile never explicitly says God died on a cross, is what I meant.
O’ - if only you understood love like the way we do.
Well I have a secret document from the planet Zubzub and if you only understand that you would believe me too.

What kind of answer is that? What do you understand about love that I don’t, that has anything to do with God appeasing His anger against humanity by sacrificing Himself?

People did what they were told, they showed God they trusted in Him. So that’s mainly what sacrifices did, they were a show of faith.

… What kind of answer is that? What do you understand about love that I don’t, that has anything to do with God appeasing His anger against humanity by sacrificing Himself?
Isn’t that what love is; To sacrifice yourself?

We sacrifice ourselves in many ways for our loved ones - maybe not by dying - but we sacrifice just the same.
People did what they were told, they showed God they trusted in Him. So that’s mainly what sacrifices did, they were a show of faith.
I’m not sure. I think sacraments are a show of faith. A sacrifice is worship.

Yeah but you have God saying SOMEONE MUST DIE! and then God saying I’LL DIE! Why does God need to die for some rule He made up to appease His own anger?

It’s like if I had a rule in my home that disobedient children are spanked, then if one disobeys, I spank myself instead. Sounds silly doesn’t it.

This is the result of oversimplifying what Jesus did. He had to be a martyr to be in the position of merciful judge over us. If he disobeyed God, he wouldn’t be a very good judge.

It’s like a doctor has to sacrifice years in school so he can be a doctor to save our lives. His going to school doesn’t save our lives, what he does after that saves.

Same with Jesus. It’s a practical and sensible explanation. He had to die so he could be judge to save us, his death alone doesn’t save us.

So when you give some mystical explanation of God requiring His own blood to appease His own anger, that just doesn’t make sense.

At least compared to what I say, which doesn’t require Jesus to be a God to do it, only a good judge picked by God.

So God sacrificing Himself to prevent His own punishment doesn’t really work for me.
I’m not sure. I think sacraments are a show of faith. A sacrifice is worship.
Worship is a show of faith. ?

Yeah but you have God saying SOMEONE MUST DIE! and then God saying I’LL DIE! Why does God need to die for some rule He made up to appease His own anger?
Ok… I’m thinking out aloud now. So excuse me if I go astray…

God didn’t make up the rule. It’s just that God is perfect and can not be in the presence of sin. Sin must be killed. The beauty of Jesus is that when he took on our sin, he was not only killed, but he had the power to be risen. Death has no victory over Jesus. (I’m not sure if you believe in the resurrection of Jesus or not.)

So, if we give us sins to Jesus, he can kill the sin and yet raise us up - because that’s what he said he’ll do.
It’s like if I had a rule in my home that disobedient children are spanked, then if one disobeys, I spank myself instead. Sounds silly doesn’t it.
It would only sound silly if your children didn’t appreciate you spanking yourself instead of them. If my father bore the suffering for me, I would love him even more.
This is the result of oversimplifying what Jesus did. He had to be a martyr to be in the position of merciful judge over us. If he disobeyed God, he wouldn’t be a very good judge.
That may be FaithofAbraham - but it’s not Christianity.
It’s like a doctor has to sacrifice years in school so he can be a doctor to save our lives. His going to school doesn’t save our lives, what he does after that saves.
We agree. The doctor can only work if you are willing to allow him to be your doctor. If you deny the doctor, you’ll probably end up dead.
Same with Jesus. It’s a practical and sensible explanation. He had to die so he could be judge to save us, his death alone doesn’t save us.
We agree. His death will not work for you unless you embrace Him.
So when you give some mystical explanation of God requiring His own blood to appease His own anger, that just doesn’t make sense.

At least compared to what I say, which doesn’t require Jesus to be a God to do it, only a good judge picked by God.

Well, I’m glad you think Jesus is a good judge picked by God. Who else could possibly be a good judge?

Where does it say Jesus is omnipotent?

2 Cor 5:10-For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.

Rev 2:23-“all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.”

How will He judge unless He knows every little detail of everyone’s life, heart and mind, of all people in all times and not be omnipotent and omnipresent? how will His Judgment be Just, the Just Judgment of God, unless He has God’s wisdom? you tell me…

Matt 18:20-“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

What do you make of this statement, to all people, at the same time?

Matt 28:20-“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

how can He be with all people at the same time?

so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 1:7-8

How unless He is omnipotent and omnipresent?

Can you quote me one single prophet who spoke like this?
Why does Jesus have to be God to be able to know God’s will?

Where does it say Jesus is omnipotent?
Matthew 18:20 - “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

If that is not omnipotent, I don’t know what is.

There are scripture verses that show that Jesus was man, and there are scripture verses that say that Jesus is God. I have no problems believing in anything Scripture says.

FaithOfAbraham, I you won’t find an answer if you’re not even looking for one. You mentioned something about believing in a doctrine that makes more sense? By deciding for yourself that Jesus was mere man, made into God, you have neglected all other scripture passages mentioned by everyone else. Yet, by accepting that Jesus IS God, you wouldn’t lose any meaning in all your own scriptural evidence. After all, we did conclude that Jesus, fully man and fully ETERNAL God, can say that He is “below” God the Father, and He can say that He IS God.

Simply by insisting that God would not do something silly to become one of us (and we’ve concluded that He didn’t HAVE to, He just did), are you not degrading God to man already? God is God. He can do anything He jolly well wants to. I’m just glad He’s jolly well loved us enough to do such things for us - me AND you. Credit to Him! 👍

Matthew 18:20 - “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

If that is not omnipotent, I don’t know what is.
It means that God the Father will do for you as He would for Jesus, if you ask in the name of Jesus. It doesn’t say Jesus is God.

Matthew 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
There are scripture verses that show that Jesus was man, and there are scripture verses that say that Jesus is God. I have no problems believing in anything Scripture says.
You interpret them saying Jesus is God, I don’t. I believe Jesus has power of God over us now, because God gave it to him, but not born that way. As I’ve shown.
FaithOfAbraham, I you won’t find an answer if you’re not even looking for one. You mentioned something about believing in a doctrine that makes more sense? By deciding for yourself that Jesus was mere man, made into God, you have neglected all other scripture passages mentioned by everyone else.
I addressed each one. One person here says ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE, JESUS IS GOD! Then I show where Jesus gets his power of judgment from God, he didn’t have it as God. Then silence. Then a few days later someone says it all over again.

So I just see it as denial, not wanting to give up doctrine for what the text really says. But I’ll still discuss it, I’m patient.
Yet, by accepting that Jesus IS God, you wouldn’t lose any meaning in all your own scriptural evidence. After all, we did conclude that Jesus, fully man and fully ETERNAL God, can say that He is “below” God the Father, and He can say that He IS God.
Here’s only one problem. When you say Jesus existed eternally as God then you kind of blow off that human spirit in favor of the God aspect. You ignore that the Jesus who exists now is a man, if nothing else.

So this Jesus who you say is fully human did not exist eternally as God. God existed eternally, then the human flesh and spirit of Jesus existed after that.

Now I’m fine with God going to dwell in Jesus the man as He would with any prophet, and elevating Jesus to a powerful position of position of God over us, while still being a servant of Father God who is God of all children and sons of God, Jesus being the best one.

But when you say things like there are two God types and one turned into a man and he was God sometimes but other times he prayed as a man and he flipflopped back and forth…it gets too messy for me.

So it’s better to say Jesus was born a human, then God went to dwell in him and gave him a lot of power as Messiah. Simple.
Simply by insisting that God would not do something silly to become one of us (and we’ve concluded that He didn’t HAVE to, He just did), are you not degrading God to man already? God is God. Well I don’t tend to believe in things unless there’s a good reason for them. My view of Jesus, as a man who was given a lot of power by God, make sense to me, the Christian way does not.

It’s “messy” for me too; I don’t fully understand how or why God does things, or even the way He chooses to do them. But that’s why He’s God, and I’m not. Ultimately, your choice is to believe that God’s is a human intelligence, but it isn’t. We can think it’s impossible all we want, and choose what is convenient for us, but I think that still undermines His divine ability to do anything He wants.
