Did Jesus descend to the dead or to Hell?

I read that the original Aposltes’ Creed stated Jesus descended to Hell; the third day, He rose again from the dead…

But in church, we say that Jesus descended to the “dead”. Did Jesus descend to Hell before rising? And why was it changed to “dead” instead of “Hell”.
