In church sunday nov. 28th / 10… The priest said that next year some wording will be changed in the mass. He said that jesues “died for us” next year he said, it will say… He “died for many”…the priest also said we have have a 50/50 chance of being saved. According to catholic teaching in school, we were taught that jesus died for “all” us sinners.
I don’t understand why we only have a 50 / 50 chance of being saved!

Has anyone heard of this yet??

That 50/50 chance he mentioned has no basis in Church teaching. And Jesus, who is the source of our knowledge about our salvation says nothing of the sort.
For what Jesus will judge us on, read His account of the Judgement of souls, and the criteria by which He will judge us, Matthew 25 verses 31-46. That shows the choice is up to us and that He certainly doesn’t put a numbers limit on who is saved.

My guess is with the 50/50 he wasn’t referring to any real probability, just that ultimately there are only two options in the end. So 1 out of 2 options is being saved.

Literal understanding of numbers (or finite human judgements of God) usually just runs into trouble. I can’t count how many questions I get about how many years are spent in purgatory for certain sins or anything else of the sort.

Right, 50/50 isn’t about actual probabilities but the fact that we would end up in 1 of 2 places, Heaven or Hell. Either we’re saved or not.

Jesus died for all; however God is omniscient and he knows that not everybody will accept the gift of salvation.

If you are correct in reporting what your priest said (50/50 chance of salvation) it simply indicates that your priest is quite ignorant about math! 😃

I didn’t think the odds were that good. the gate is narrow from what I remember.

The gate is not narrow, the path is. A narrow path doesn’t mean only a few will be saved. It means to travel that path we are afforded very minimal deviation. That is why we need to follow the Church to make sure our beliefs are within the narrow path. If we make up our own beliefs and interpret scripture on our own, we deviate from the narrow path and it means we are no longer on the path to salvation.

Actually friend the ODDS are a GREAT deal worse than 50-50:eek:

Christ did Die for ALL in order to make REDEMPTION possible to All. Salvation and Redemption are not of the same meaning.

Redemption means that the GATES to heaven are once again open; and access is again Possible.[They had been blocked by Orginial Sin in which we all share.]

Salvation is a process not a single act by God HIS CHOICE} as evidenced by MANY bible references.

Love and prayrs,
Pat

please double check your source that the gate is not narrow and that a narrow path doesn’t mean only a few will be saved.

My source in in Matthew 7 says

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Narrow path AND a small, narrow gate to slavation ; for the FEW
Wide gate to destruction AND a broad road to destruction for the MANY

What I said is consistent to scripture. The gate is described as small, not narrow. Small and narrow can be different things. Since different words were used to describe each, I would take it that they were not intended to mean the same thing.

A few will find it is again consistent with what I said. You deviate from the narrow path and you’re off the path. You won’t find the gate that way if you’re off the path. But that doesn’t that only a few can be on the path. It also did not say that the entrance is only for the few, its says that only a few will find the entrance.

You have to analyze the words carefully. To say that only a few will find the entrance does not mean the opportunity is not there for all. But to say that the entrance is for few only means that others will not have that chance at all. That is not what the Church teaches. All have the opportunity to find the gate, all can be on the path, but because the path is narrow many will deviate and will not find the gate.

Pardon tester, I did not see that you are a Protestant. I was going to ask that. I see you are being a good one 😃

I stand by what I said. You can pick apart words and play with semantics all you want. Salvation is meant for all, Jesus gave us the map, unfortunately all are not good at following instructions.

I completely agree that salvation is offered to all.

I think that the discussion between the words many and few is meaningless. If you look at the parables even one missing sheep is one too many. God wants everybody in heaven and so anything below 100% is few, and even just one going to hell is too many.

next year he said, it will say… He “died for many”
That is what the official version of the Mass (in Latin) has said all along. It matches what Jesus said in Matthew 26:28. They are just fixing the translation.
the priest also said we have have a 50/50 chance of being saved.
Follow Christ faithfully and your odds are a lot better than 50/50. Rebel against God and your odds are worse.

Pro vobis et pro multis

For you and for many (i.e. the multitudes, not “all”).

THis is also what Scripture records in the Last supper narratives.

Let us bow our heads and be Faithful.

The English translation of a Latin translation taken out of linguistic and historical context is getting closer to a pseudo sola scriptura approach and makes for bad theology.

St Thomas Aquinas gave a definite answer :

Jesus died ‘for all’

1 Timothy 2:6 Who gave himself a redemption for all, a testimony in due times.

virtually, so every single individual has the possibility for salvation w/o exception,

but actually only many will be saved, there is hell and it is populated. The official Latin of the Mass taken from the synoptic Gospel says ‘pro multis’

Mark 14:24 And he said to them: This is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many.

the present ‘for all’ was mistranslation, which is corrected now

For you and for many (i.e. the multitudes, not “all”).
The Church has always taught that Christ’s sacrifice was sufficient for “all”, efficacious for “many”. However, it is not our place to decide for whom exactly Christ died.
